This weekend, the Tony Durney Memorial Cup takes place at Wellington Family Speedway on 11 April, an event held in memory of our head of International Sales, Corey Durney’s father, Tony, who raced stock cars in the early 1980s.

Once lost and reinstated in 2024 with Racetech's support, this event continues to grow as a meaningful fixture on our hometown racing calendar, with four teams competing this year. More than a sponsorship, our support for this special event is about standing behind our team, honouring the history that shaped them, and helping keep local motorsport legacies alive.

We are seeking a part-time Social Media Coordinator with a passion for motorsport to help share the Racetech story and expand our reach to more racers around New Zealand and Australia. This is a part-time/hybrid role with occasional motorsport event work. Candidates are preferably based in Wellington or reasonable driving distance to our Seaview headquarters. Our exclusive back-mounting geometry set the global standard for competition seat safety and performance since Racetech became the first seat manufacturer to achieve the highest FIA safety standard of 8862-2009 with a back mount in 2009. Racetech’s back mounting system delivers on both safety and performance.

In a preferred impact scenario, the driver’s head, neck and torso should all remain in alignment. Combined with our squared-shoulder seat shell architecture, back mounting increases the rigidity of the seat so that it maintains its shape and position during an impact, keeping your harnesses and HANS in place and your body properly aligned during any subsequent impacts. A back-mounted seat also ensures that your head remains a safe distance from hitting any part of the rollcage or chassis.

From a performance standpoint, mounting directly to the rollbar/chassis makes the seat part of the vehicle’s structure, resulting in a enhanced feeling of chassis feedback and added stability when it matters most…on the sharpest corners, hardest launches and in a crash. starts at the top for us. Our Managing Director, David Black, didn’t just build Racetech - he lived through the reason it exists.

After beginning his racing career on motorcycles, David started rallying in 1985 and built a decorated career behind the wheel as a 3-time F2 class champion in the Rally New Zealand round of WRC. His passion for safety grew through personal experience - particularly after suffering a severe frontal crash after his F2 Rally Car flew off a 23 meter cliff, landing in a stream.

At the time, Racetech was a one-man operation started by a skilled craftsman. In the early 90’s, there wasn’t anywhere in Wellington that serious racers could get their hands on motorsport parts, so David founded Black Rally Sport and was chosen as the official Racetech distributor in the North Island. Four years following his harrowing rally wreck, David purchased Racetech, dedicating years of research and collaboration with some of the best minds in automotive safety to serve his original mission of getting drivers home safe by designing, engineering and manufacturing the world’s most advanced competition seats.

Whether you’re drag racing in a Pro-Mod or advanced-ET small-tire car, chassis feel is essential to confidently manage tire shake and suspension inputs off the line and down the track. Most of that chassis feel comes through the seat base, so we’ve created a 0.6 inch Flat Base Cushion to feel more subtle inputs from the chassis and suspension without sitting directly on the hard seat shell. Stay more connected to your race car while protecting your posture and reducing spinal impact.
