MK7 R — STAGE 2 CUSTOM DYNO TUNING | EARLY IS38

Another Golf Mk7 R in with us, this time a 2014 DSG for the full R-Tech treatment.

The car came in for:

🔧 Inlet cleaning
💉 Injector testing & servicing
🔩 Injector seal replacement
🧼 Haldex filter cleaning
🏁 Stage 2 custom ECU & TCU dyno tuning

The customer had previously had the car tuned to around 400 hp, but unfortunately the calibration came with the obligatory pops, bangs and flames.

And that really wasn't his cup of tea. 😂

So when our inlet cleaning + injector service + mapping special offer came along, he decided to take full advantage and save himself £100s in the process.

Once all the health checks and servicing were completed, we got the car onto the dyno.

The hardware consisted of an upgraded FMIC, upgraded induction kit, performance downpipe, while retaining the standard resonator and rear silencer.

And that's actually an exhaust combination we really like on the IS38.

Why?

Because we're not interested in making a car obnoxious for the sake of it.

This setup gives us a really good balance of:

✅ Drivability
✅ Transient turbo response
✅ Efficiency
✅ Noise
✅ Turbo balance
✅ Usable performance

This is particularly important with the early 2014 IS38 turbos, which have a reputation for suffering from imbalance at higher shaft speeds.

So rather than simply chasing the biggest possible peak number, we've taken our usual approach.

Make the most of the efficient part of the turbo's operating range, concentrate on the midrange performance and progressively taper the boost and shaft speed as RPM increases.

The result is a really strong, punchy midrange that makes the car feel properly alive, while dramatically reducing the stress placed on the turbo at the top end.

This approach has massively reduced the failure rate we've seen from these early IS38s at Stage 2.

And let's be honest...

IS38 turbo failures seem to be having a bit of a comeback on TikTok recently this summer.

Although now I've written that, I've probably just jinxed this poor bloody turbo. 🤦‍♂️🤣

The final calibration produced:

🔥 391 hp
🔥 418 lb-ft

With a lovely, subtle overrun at higher RPM — no pops, no bangs, no flames, just a nice clean calibration.

Most importantly, the car has a seriously strong midrange and a power delivery that's actually designed around keeping the IS38 happy rather than trying to extract every last horsepower from it.

Hopefully we've ticked all the right boxes for the customer.

A properly serviced car, a sensible calibration, strong midrange performance and hopefully…

many thousands of miles without having to meet the turbine wheel outside the housing. 😂

Now let's just hope I haven't jinxed it by saying that aswell. 🤣🏁

MK7 GTI DSG — STAGE 2 CUSTOM DYNO TUNING

Another Golf Mk7 GTI 2.0 TSI DSG in with us, this time for a Stage 2 ECU & TCU custom tuning session.

Before we even think about turning the power up, we carry out our full pre-tuning health check.

This one included:

🔧 Full health check
📊 Pre-tuning data logging
🔍 Turbo inspection
💨 Pressure testing
🔬 Cylinder inspection

Once everything was checked and looking good, it was time to get it onto the dyno and start unlocking some additional Gower Power. 😎

The setup on this GTI consisted of a full sports cat exhaust system, R600 intake and, interestingly, the standard intercooler.

The IS20 is a great little turbo, but there's always a temptation to keep pushing and pushing the boost in the hunt for that last few horsepower.

That's not really our approach.

With a small turbo like the IS20, we would much rather concentrate on the volume underneath the curves than ring the absolute nuts out of it trying to chase a peak number right at the point where the turbo is becoming inefficient especially with the stock intercooler still in place.

The result is a car that feels strong across the rev range, responds properly and delivers the sort of power curve that makes the car enjoyable to actually drive.

This GTI was also fitted with our 2WD Add-On package, giving us additional control and drivability strategies within the calibration.

And, as it turned out, that was a bit of a bonus...

Because when it came to the road setup and testing, it was absolutely pi***ng it down! 🌧️😂

Thankfully, our enhanced ASR strategy was happily buzzing away in the background, helping keep the power under control while still allowing us to properly test and optimise the car.

Wet roads, front-wheel drive and a freshly tuned GTI...

What could possibly go wrong? 😂

The important thing is that the car remains predictable, controllable and fun rather than simply being a dyno number.

Another properly health-checked, custom tuned GTI leaving R-Tech with some additional Gower Power and a calibration built around response, control, drivability and usable performance. 🏁

WHEN YOUR STAGE 3 SKODA VRS ARRIVES ON A TRAILER… 😳

This one started off as a bit of a head-scratcher!

A Skoda Octavia VRS estate, fitted with an IS38 turbo, arrived with us on a trailer for a custom dyno tuning session.

The plan was simple…

Get it on the dyno, carry out all the usual health checks and calibration work, and turn it into a properly sorted Stage 3 car.

Except there was one small problem.

When we jumped in and started the car from cold, it would run for a few seconds and then cut out.

🤔 Hmmmm…

The customer had recently fitted MK7 R injectors and said that was when the problem had started.

Now, although the injector characteristics are different, they shouldn't be so wildly different that the engine wouldn't start, run and drive with them fitted without calibration.

So we knew there was potentially something else going on.

No useful fault codes.

Nothing obvious pointing us in the right direction.

So we pulled the injectors and had them tested.

That's when we noticed they were actually MK7.5 R OPF injectors.

Again, the injectors themselves weren't the problem.

They all tested perfectly.

Time for the next stage of diagnostics…

Interrogate the customer. 😂

Dark room.

Table and chairs.

Bright spotlight.

Pillars ready to pull out the fingernails…

🤣🤣🤣

Thankfully, it was actually just a series of simple questions about exactly what had been changed and how it had been fitted.

The customer explained that he'd fitted the MK7.5 R injectors along with the corresponding common rail, which physically fitted and was effectively the same type of rail as the one originally fitted to the VRS engine.

Then we asked:

“Did you swap the original VRS fuel rail pressure sensor into the replacement rail?”

“No, I used the sensor that came with the MK7.5 R rail.”

💡 BOOM!

The penny dropped.

The fuel pressure sensors on the non-OPF and OPF engines operate on completely different pressure scales.

The MK7.5 R OPF sensor is scaled up to around 350 bar, whereas the original sensor is designed for the lower pressure range used by the VRS.

That meant the ECU was receiving completely incorrect fuel pressure information.

So while the ECU thought it knew what fuel pressure was actually being produced, the information it was receiving simply didn't correspond correctly to reality.

And that was the reason the fuelling was all over the place.

We fitted the correct original VRS pressure sensor back into the rail…

…and the car immediately ran absolutely flawlessly. 😎

The rest of the health checks were completed and everything passed with flying colours.

Finally… time for the dyno! 🏁

We then got stuck into the custom Stage 3 ECU and TCU calibration, using our usual approach to control and drivability rather than simply chasing a big headline number.

Our calibration included:

🔹 Boost by gear
🔹 Enhanced ASR strategy
🔹 Linear throttle torque demand
🔹 Pre-emptive progressive boost control
🔹 Custom ECU & TCU calibration
🔹 Full dyno testing and optimisation

The final result:

🔥 380 hp
🔥 390 lb-ft

But as always, the peak numbers aren't the whole story.

What we're really interested in is the volume underneath the curves.

This one produced some seriously healthy area under both the horsepower and torque curves, giving the car the sort of response and drivability we're looking for from an IS38-powered VRS.

From arriving on a tow truck…

To a completely sorted, properly diagnosed and 380 hp Stage 3 VRS.

Not a bad day's work. 😎🏁

And once again, a reminder that diagnostics isn't always about fault codes.

Sometimes you have to ask the right questions, understand exactly what has been changed and, most importantly…

Think outside the box.

🚨 “SINCE YOU WORKED ON MY CAR, MY GEARBOX FELL OUT…” 😂

It could have been that phone call.

One of the frustrating things about working in the motor trade, especially when carrying out tuning, servicing or repairs, is that when an unrelated problem happens afterwards, the first thing you often hear is:

“It was fine until you worked on it…” 🤦‍♂️

Which is exactly why, when a car is in our workshop, we try not to have blinkers on.

We don't just look at the part we're working on and send the car back out the door. If something catches our eye, feels wrong or doesn't look quite right, we'll investigate it.

Take this Skoda Octavia VRS 2.0 TSI.

The car came in for an inlet cleaning and injector testing service. During the inlet cleaning process, we need to rotate the engine from the crank pulley.

While doing this, Cory noticed the engine seemed to be rocking backwards and forwards more than it should.

Rather than ignore it, he carried out a quick extended health check underneath the car.

Good job he did.

The gearbox dog-bone mount was basically being held together by luck. 😳

With the gearbox being rocked, both mounting bolts could actually be moved in and out of the gearbox casing by hand.

Even worse, the alloy casting had started to crack and the threads in the gearbox casing had been pulled out.

Our suspicion is that at some point the bolts had been tightened with an impact gun while they weren't correctly started into the threads. The gearbox casing is alloy, so it's remarkably easy to damage the threads if the bolts aren't started correctly by hand first.

This could have ended very differently.

If that mount had finally let go once the customer had driven away, the conversation could easily have been:

“Since you worked on my car, my gearbox fell out…” 🤦‍♂️😂

Thankfully, Cory wasn't prepared to just point it out and send the car away.

He went out of his way to repair it by fitting two helicoils into the damaged threads, allowing the mount to be tightened back down rock solid.

It was intended as a temporary repair...

…but knowing us, it'll probably end up being a permanent one! 😂

And this is something we've really tried to build into the way we work.

If we find a problem that we haven't caused and haven't been asked to repair, we'll still try to fix it if it's something straightforward and safe to do.

If we can't fix it there and then, we'll document it with photographs/videos and put clear recommendations on the customer's job card.

Because we regularly find things that could potentially come back and bite us in the arse later. 😂

And we've got another example...

Last week an S3 came in for work.

The customer had driven the car for around two hours to get to us.

James, our mechanic, jumped into the car with the customer standing right beside it, selected reverse...

…and the gearbox immediately jumped out of gear and stalled the engine.

The car wouldn't drive properly again without jumping out of gear.

Luckily, it decided to s**t itself in our workshop. 😂

Because if the customer had walked away and we had discovered the problem after moving the car, imagine the conversation:

“It was absolutely perfect when I dropped it off. I’d just driven two hours and it didn't miss a beat.”

How exactly do you argue with that? 😂

We managed to find some additional time to investigate the problem and, thankfully, managed to resolve it without the customer needing a new gearbox.

Another garage could quite easily have diagnosed that as a gearbox replacement.

So sometimes, when a car develops a problem while it's with us, we're actually quite lucky.

Not because we caused it...

…but because we've got the opportunity to find it, diagnose it and hopefully fix it before the customer drives away.

That's why we believe a good workshop shouldn't just do the job that's written on the job card.

Look beyond the job. Check the car. Find the problems. Fix what you can. Document what you can't.

Because we'd much rather have the conversation:

“Good news — we found this before you drove home.”

…than:

“Since you worked on my car…” 😬😂

🔥 MK5 GOLF GTI ED30 — ONE YEAR LATER & NOW OVER 400HP 🔥

Exactly one year to the day since this Mk5 Golf ED30 was last on our dyno, when we tuned it to Stage 2+ on the factory K04-064 turbo.

Fast forward 12 months and it’s back — this time with an anti-surge turbo core and actuator, fitted by Coles Motorsport Developments.

And thankfully, it’s also back with the correct gearbox! 😂

From memory, last year it was running a TDI-ratio gearbox, so that was another thing we were happy to see changed!

The customer wasn't chasing a 400hp dyno printout. The goal was the complete package and to make the most of what the engine, turbo and conditions were capable of.

As it turned out, everything came together perfectly.

The engine was healthy, the hardware was working efficiently and the conditions were right to push the anti-surge K04 setup towards the upper end of what we would expect from this type of turbo.

The result?

💥 Over 400hp
💥 Excellent torque delivery
💥 Beautiful, smooth curves
💥 Strong volume throughout the powerband
💥 Boost-by-gear strategy
💥 A genuinely healthy and efficient setup

And this is exactly why we don't recommend chasing a particular dyno number.

If the customer had come in saying “I want 400hp”, Sod's Law says the car would probably have decided it only wanted to make 370hp! 😂

Don't chase numbers. Build the right setup and let the car tell you what it's capable of.

⚠️ IMPORTANT ACTUATOR INFORMATION

One thing we did recommend changing on this car was the aftermarket uprated actuator.

Unfortunately, we've seen too many failures with these aftermarket actuators. We were originally told the problem was limited to one particular batch, but experience has shown us that failures can occur across different batches.

For the past 12+ months our own K04 upgrade kits have used the factory actuator with our upgraded spring kit instead.

We've seen actuator failure rates of around 1 in 10 with some aftermarket units.

Most failures we've encountered result in the actuator splitting and losing some boost — but more recently we've seen failures where the actuator body twists and changes angle, resulting in diaphragm damage and severe overboost.

In the worst-case scenario, this can lead to serious engine damage.

We're highlighting this because there are still companies supplying and fitting these actuators, and some simply aren't aware of the issues we've been seeing.

We're now supplying our actuator spring kits to a number of trade customers, and Josh Gander / VAGbyJosh is also on board with us and is now supplying the factory-style actuator solution.

We're not saying every aftermarket actuator will fail — but based on what we've seen over the years, it's something worth being aware of.

Another seriously impressive ED30, and another example of why the complete setup matters far more than simply chasing a number. 🏁

A cost effective way to upgrade from a k03...

🔥 **GOLF MK5 GTI DSG — K03 HYBRID TURBO UPGRADE & CUSTOM DYNO TUNING** 🔥

This Mk5 GTI 2.0TFSI DSG is back with us, but this time with a turbo upgrade! 🏁

A few weeks ago we had the car in for tuning, where we attempted to achieve Stage 2+ style numbers from the original K03. Unfortunately, the turbo wasn’t playing ball. Wastegate issues meant it was flat on performance, so there was little point trying to push it any further.

The customer then got in touch with **VAGbyJosh** and opted for a direct bolt-on K03 hybrid turbo with an anti-surge core.

A really nice, simple and cost-effective next step. 👌

Being a direct bolt-on setup meant:
✅ No additional boost pipework required
✅ No need to relocate the DV
✅ No K04 injectors required

Once the hybrid was fitted, we carried out another health check before getting the GTI back onto the dyno for a full custom tuning session.

This session wasn’t about chasing a big headline number. The car is still running the **factory stock cat-back exhaust**, so the focus was on achieving **massive gains in volume under both curves**, while tuning as safely as possible and taking the complete hardware package into account.

Keeping the factory injectors alone saved the customer several hundred pounds, while choosing the direct bolt-on K03 hybrid route also saved hundreds compared with a more involved K04-style conversion.

The end result?

🔥 **Beautiful curves**
🔥 Huge improvement throughout the power and torque delivery
🔥 Excellent response and drivability
🔥 Boost-by-gear strategy for improved traction
🔥 A sensible, cost-effective setup with plenty of performance

With a suitable performance exhaust system, this hardware package would have had the potential to make around **360hp**.

Another example of why we don't just chase the biggest number on the dyno. The aim is to make the **whole setup work properly**, with usable power, strong volume under the curves, sensible boost control and good drivability.

🔥 STICKING WITH THE RED MK7 GOLF THEME — MK7 GTI 2.0 TSI DSG 🔥

Another very tidy red Mk7 through the workshop, this time a Golf GTI 2.0 TSI DSG, in with us for one of our Stage 1 ECU & TCU tuning packages. 🏁

This GTI is running just a few simple supporting modifications:

🔧 Inlet pipe & elbow
🔧 Panel filter
🔧 Standard airbox

Nothing excessive, and certainly no need to go chasing a huge list of modifications for a Stage 1 setup.

But for us, making power is only part of the job.

These little IS20 turbocharged engines respond extremely well to calibration, and it’s relatively easy to produce impressive power and torque figures. The difficult part is making all that torque usable, predictable and enjoyable — particularly in a 2WD GTI.

That’s something we’ve spent a considerable amount of time developing.

Our 2WD drivability strategy incorporates:

⚙️ Boost by gear
⚙️ Enhanced ASR traction control strategies
⚙️ Carefully controlled torque delivery
⚙️ Our unique approach to linear throttle/torque demand
⚙️ DSG TCU calibration to complement the ECU tune

Because let's be honest — big numbers on a dyno sheet don't automatically make a great GTI.

Dump a huge amount of torque into first and second gear and all you've achieved is wheelspin, traction intervention and a throttle pedal that feels more like an on/off switch. 🤷‍♂️

We'd much rather spend the time developing a calibration that allows the driver to actually use the performance.

The throttle should feel natural and progressive. The torque should arrive in a controlled way. The DSG should work with the engine rather than against it, and the car should put its power down properly.

Because where does a GTI really belong?

Not sat looking pretty on a dyno...

It's on the twisty, winding B-roads, where you can exploit the chassis, work the throttle and enjoy that classic GTI combination of performance, agility and everyday usability. 🏁💨

That's the sort of Stage 1 GTI we like building.

Not just a car that makes more power —
a car that's genuinely more fun to drive. ❤️

A really tidy and lovely Golf Mk7.5R DSG in with us for a Stage 2 custom dyno tuning session. 🏁

This car is clearly the customer’s pride and joy — and it shows!

No expense has been spared, but the modifications have been kept nice and subtle, both inside and out. 👌

Taking our advice on the supporting hardware, the customer opted for a Scorpion sports cat exhaust system, running non-resonated into a valved rear section.

For intercooling, he went with one of our recommended options — the Direnza MTV intercooler.

The other intercooler we highly recommend for this platform is the Do88.

To finish off the engine breathing modifications, an APR closed carbon-fibre induction kit with intake elbow was fitted.

Then it was onto the dyno… 📈🔥

🏁 IS38 TUNING — IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT THE PEAK NUMBER

When we're tuning an IS38, we're not the tuner chasing every last drop of horsepower just for a big peak number to wave around! 😂

We're much more interested in what's happening under the curves. We will work on torque and power where the turbo is most efficient, instead of running the turbo flat out at the top end pumping hot air, over speeding it and shaking itself apart.

Our goal is to achieve:

✅ Strong power throughout the rev range
✅ Huge area under the torque & power curves
✅ Excellent throttle response
✅ Strong drivability
✅ Consistent performance
✅ Sensible thermal and mechanical loading
✅ Plenty of headroom for durability and reliability

And most importantly…

KEEP THE IS38 IN ONE PIECE! 😂

Our tuning approach, methods and hardware recommendations — particularly when it comes to the exhaust system — have given us a fantastic track record with the IS38 platform over the last 6 years, with an extremely low failure rate.

Now I've said that, I've probably just jinxed myself! 🤣

But thankfully, the customer is already planning his return visit over the next couple of years for Stage 3 and a hybrid turbo, so we'll get another chance to play with it then. 😎

For now though, this Stage 2 setup should be providing some seriously big grins behind the wheel! 😁🔥

Another customer making the trip to R-Tech Performance and taking full advantage of our special offer package deal!

This one came in for a Stage 1 custom tuning session, combined with some carefully selected hardware upgrades:

🔧 Do88 upgraded intercooler
🔧 Intake pipe & res delete
🔧 Stock airbox with performance panel filter

Before we even went anywhere near the dyno, we carried out our full pre-tuning preparation:

✅ Inlet cleaning
✅ All 8 injectors tested & professionally cleaned
✅ Full vehicle health check
✅ Diagnostics & data logging
✅ Haldex pump filter cleaning

Then it was onto the dyno for a fully custom calibration of both the engine and gearbox.

During the initial runs, once everything was up to temperature, we noticed the inlet camshaft starting to oscillate away from its specified position.

Thankfully, this was a quick fix — a genuine OEM cam magnet was fitted and the issue was resolved. 👍

With everything working as it should, we could get back to the tuning and start making some pretty epic curves! 📈🔥

And the results?

Stock catalytic converter.
Stock rear exhaust.
Stock airbox.
Just a decent intercooler and intake improvements.

And it's producing numbers right up there with Stage 2 figures! 😳💥

This is a great example of why you don't necessarily need to spend thousands on massive high-flow exhaust systems, huge intakes and every modification under the sun.

Get the fundamentals right, make sure the car is mechanically healthy, control the temperatures and then build a proper custom calibration around the hardware that's actually fitted.

These engines respond incredibly well to a sensible combination of upgrades — and the results speak for themselves. 👌

An epic pocket rocket!
These are so responsive and so much fun when tuned.

2019 Polo GTI DSG OPF in for a stage 2 custom dyno tuning session. Modifications were Performance exhaust with sportscat, Airtech intercooler APR induction kit, intake elbow. The mapping was setup up with our unique approach to boost by gear, linear throttle torque demand and Enhanced ASR strategy. The tuning was setup chasing maximum volume underneath both curves not chasing single peak numbers. The greater the volume underneath them curves the more fun and faster the car is, the volume gained on this one is absolutely amazing. The numbers don't do this car justice.
