IT'S BACK TO SCHOOL TIME!

School days bring congestion: School buses are picking up their passengers, kids on bikes are hurrying to get to school before the bell rings, harried parents are trying to drop their kids off before work. It's never more important for drivers to slow down and pay attention than when kids are present – especially before and after school.

An Air Filter might not seem an important component to regularly check and change, but they are essential in maintaining your car’s performance. The filter prevents small particles from entering the engine and causing potentially expensive damage. But that’s not the only benefit, as you can read below:

1. Increased Fuel Efficiency

Replacing a clogged air filter can increase fuel efficiency and improve acceleration, depending on your car make and model. When you realise that, it makes sense to regularly replace your air filters.
How can an air filter make so much difference? A dirty or damaged air filter limits the amount of air flowing into your car’s engine, making it work harder and, therefore, using more fuel. As your engine needs more than 10,000 litres of oxygen to burn every litre of fuel, it’s important not to restrict this air flow.

2. Reduced Emissions

Dirty or damaged air filters reduce the air flow to the engine, changing your car’s air-fuel balance. This imbalance can pollute spark plugs, causing the engine to miss or rough idle; increase engine depositions; and cause the ‘Service Engine’ light to turn on. More importantly, the imbalance also has a direct impact on your car’s exhaust emissions.

3. Prolongs Engine Life

A particle as small as a grain of salt can get through a damaged air filter and do a lot of damage to internal engine parts, such as cylinders and pistons, which can be very expensive to repair. That’s why regularly replacing your air filter is so important. A clean air filter is designed to capture dirt and debris from the outside air, preventing them from reaching the combustion chamber and reducing the likelihood of you receiving a large repair bill.

Replacing your Air Filters:

Naturally, your air filters should be replaced in case of any damage. However, to maintain the highest possible performance of your car, it is recommended to replace your air filters at least every 12,000 to 15,000 miles (19,000 to 24,000 km). This interval should be reduced if you often drive in dusty conditions. It’s best to check the maintenance schedule provided by the manufacturer of your car for the appropriate replacement schedule.

Summer is the main season for “cone zones,” road construction where you will likely hit a bump or two, or come across loose stones and other hazards. These rough road conditions can be tough on a vehicle’s steering and suspension system and can throw out the alignment, while loose stones have the potential to damage the vehicle’s exterior or windshield, according to the non-profit Car Care Council.

If your gas-powered vehicle’s acceleration has gone from “zoom, zoom” to “putt, putt,” there’s probably a spark plug problem.
Poor fuel economy is another indication the plugs or spark plug wires likely need replacing. Although modern spark plugs last considerably longer than those produced 30 years ago, they don’t last forever and need to be replaced at regular intervals. It’s best to check the owner’s manual.

The air filter is an important part of the engine because it helps the engine to breathe clean air, and clean air is important because it helps the engine to run efficiently and properly. Usually, air filters are replaced on every service. Still, sometimes if the car is being heavily used under dusty conditions like construction sites or heavy traffic areas, then the air filter can get clogged up much faster. Because of this, you would have to replace the air filter sooner than usual.

This customer thought they were hearing a funny noise only when the vehicle was moving. Luckily they came in after hearing the noise since the source was the wheel bearings coming loose. Which in turn can cause severe wheel vibrations, including having the wheel come off the axle. Which many of us have seen vehicles on the side of the road missing the whole wheel and hub assembly. Here's some more info:

Just a heads up if somebody try's to tell you this is normal it's not. Letting your engine and transmission mounts get this bad can cause larger repair bills due to the extra wear and tear on the wiring harness, and other components.

Thousands of vehicles by comparing their Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy ratings with actual owner-reported gas mileage as listed on the EPA’s website. Interestingly, 81.8 percent of drivers reported getting better fuel economy than the EPA estimates, although 16 percent of motorists reported their fuel economy was lower than the EPA ratings.

Auto Repair Basics What You Should Know:

Having car problems can be scary. After all, an unexpected automobile malfunction can throw a major wrench in your ability to keep up with all of your adult responsibilities, especially if you don’t have a transportation back-up plan. When something goes wrong with your car, you can either take it to an auto repair shop, or attempt to fix the problem yourself. While it’s likely that you won’t have the tools, equipment, knowledge, skill set, or patience to handle major car repairs without the help of a professional, there are a number of simple auto repairs that you should be able to tackle on your own. You just need to start with a basic understanding of how automobiles work, how they are put together, and what is most likely to go wrong. Here is some general information of what you should know, as far as Auto Repair Basics are concerned:

Regular Maintenance. You can prevent unnecessary automobile malfunctions just by taking proper care of your car. Check your owner’s manual to find out when you need to get Oil Changes, Tune Ups, Timing Belt Replacements, and more. Be loyal to the Manufacturer’s Maintenance Schedule, and your car will be loyal to you. Since we live in the Pacific Northwest extreme moisture, stop and go driving, inclines from our hills etc... all take their toll on your vehicle here in Seattle.

Know The Systems of your Automobile. Just as your body has systems that must work together for your overall functioning, your car has systems that work together in much the same way. While it is not necessary that you learn every part of every system (although that’s not a bad idea), you need to at least familiarize yourself with the systems so that you can identify from where your auto problem is originating. The systems of an automobile are: Fuel System, Ignition System, Cooling System, Intake System, Drive Train, Engine, Braking System, and Electrical System, among others. That's why at Chucks Auto Repair we actually take the time to explain and help you learn more about your car’s specifics.

OBD Diagnostics. Your vehicle’s On Board Diagnostics (OBD) feature is basically a computerized system, running throughout your car, that identifies where problems are. Any time you are experiencing auto troubles, or a mysterious warning light comes up on your dashboard, you can take your car in to a mechanic, and have your car Diagnostics completed.

This happens when a computer designed for Vehicle Diagnostics is connected and communicates with your vehicles OBD. Normally there will be History Codes stored which in turn will tell which general area is having issues. These Codes are like having a Zip code without the actual address, this is a reason many parts stores offer Free Check Engine Light Check Ups. However instead of spending money and throwing parts at your car which will more then likely not fix the true reason for the warning light it's preferred to get a reliable, accurate diagnosis of the problem, by having it checked by a Repair Shop.

If you decide that your auto repairs are too much for you to handle, you will need to find the right auto repair shop for you. If you want quality service from a name you can trust, then you should put your auto repairs into the hands of experienced professionals like us, Chucks Auto Repair. We can be reached by phone, at 206-526-1069 in North Seattle.
