Halloween is all about fun costumes and candy, but with dark streets and more foot traffic from trick-or-treaters and, it can also be dangerous. Here are five tips to keep in mind if you plan to drive tonight:

1. 5-9 pm is prime for trick-or-treating, so be especially careful on the roads at this time.
2. Put away your cell phone and avoid distracted driving.
3. Don’t drink and drive; 44% of casualties on Halloween are caused by drunk drivers. If you plan to drink, assign someone to be the designated driver.
4. Use your turn signals to communicate with other drivers and pedestrians, and be especially cautious around parked cars.
5. Slow down; kids get excited about trick-or-treating, so they may not be as careful as they should be when it comes to road safety.

We wish you and your family a safe, fun, and happy Halloween!

What should you do if your oil pressure light comes on while you’re driving?

1. Pull over when it’s safe to do so and turn off your engine.
2. Check the oil level; if it doesn’t reach the fill line, you can add more (if you have oil handy).
3. If the oil level is fine, the issue could be anything from a damaged oil delivery system to a bad oil pressure sensor. To prevent further damage to your vehicle, have your car towed to our repair shop.

Following these three steps may help prevent further damage and help you save money on repairs!

Does your car have leaves or dirt in the crevice between the hood and the windshield? This area, called the cowl, can easily become clogged or damaged during the fall, especially if you park your car outside. To clean the leaves out, use your hands to remove any large debris, then use a leaf blower or an air compressor to clean the remaining debris from the cowl, cowl drains, and the inside of the air ducts. This is also an excellent time to check the condition of your wiper blades!

Have you noticed a noxiously sweet smell when your engine is warming up or after you’ve shut off the engine? You could have a coolant leak! Other signs to watch for are the engine running warm or overheating and puddles of coolant (bright green, orange, pink, or blue-green fluid) under your car. If the smell is particularly strong in the cabin, it may be a problem with the heater core. Either of these issues can lead to expensive engine damage, so don’t wait! Schedule an appointment today.

Is your SRS warning light on? The SRS (supplemental restraint system) light indicates an issue with your vehicle’s airbag system. This could be caused by anything from a loose wire, a faulty seat belt buckle, or even a problem with the airbags themselves. It also means that your airbags may not deploy if you get into an accident. We recommend scheduling an appointment as soon as possible and avoiding driving until the issue is fixed. It may be inconvenient, but it’s not worth taking any chances!

Emission systems are designed to reduce harmful pollutants and exhaust gases from entering the atmosphere. Over time, the exhaust components can become gummed up with carbon and oil, which reduces their effectiveness. When this happens, your vehicle will still run, but it will be harder to start. It might also run rough and have poor fuel economy—and, of course, it will emit more pollutants. Have you noticed any of these signs? Ask us about an emissions system service at your next appointment!

Car batteries generally last between 3-5 years—when’s the last time you had yours replaced? If it’s been a while, your battery may be starting to show signs it needs attention, like:

• The engine doesn’t turn over as quickly as it used to
• The headlights are dimmer
• The check engine or battery dashboard warning light is on
• There’s a clicking noise when you go to start your vehicle
• Some of your electrical equipment isn’t working the way it used to
• The terminals on your batter are corroded
• Your battery is four years old or older

Even if your battery hasn’t shown any signs of being on its last legs, it’s always a good idea to have it checked out once a year to make sure it’s in good condition. Besides checking its charge, we’ll also inspect the cables and connections and look for corrosion, bulges, or any other issues.

With the darker days of fall on the horizon, now is the perfect time to schedule your battery check appointment! Call us today at (206) 527-8828.

What’s a PCV valve? PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Its job is to take the gases that are produced by the crankcase and route them back to the engine combustion chambers so they can be burned safely without harming the environment—or your vehicle.

If the PCV valve becomes too dirty, it can cause engine sludge, oil leaks, and other issues. If you’ve noticed rough idling or acceleration, strange engine noises, misfires, or poor fuel economy, contact us to schedule a PCV valve inspection!

07/22/2022

When you make a turn, the wheels on the inside of the turn have a slightly shorter distance to travel than the outer wheels, so the outside wheels need to be able to spin a little faster. The differential compensates for the distance in wheel speed—without it, the wheels would hop and scrape the road while turning. To keep your differential working its best, the differential fluid needs to be changed regularly. If the fluid gets low or too dirty to properly lubricate the moving parts, it can cause them to seize up. Not sure when you last had your differential serviced? Talk to your service advisor today!

07/13/2022

If your headlights seem dim or you’ve had issues starting your car, it’s possible your battery cables are corroded. Corrosion increases the resistance on the contact surface of the terminal, and if it’s severe enough, the flow of energy can be completely blocked. Sometimes the corrosion can be removed, but if it’s seeped into the inside of the cables, they usually need to be replaced. Once battery cables fail, they can cause all kinds of issues.

Take a look at your battery and cables. Do you see any white or green powder on the cables or battery terminals? Do the cables seem brittle, burnt, or cracked? Do they have any holes? If so, visit us to get your battery and battery cables inspected and serviced by one of our certified technicians.

Do you enjoy off-roading in your Land Rover or other 4WD/AWD vehicle? Manufacturer’s recommendations vary, but it’s generally best to have your transfer case fluid replaced every 30,000 miles—however, if you go off-road a lot, it should be changed more frequently. Talk to your service advisor today to find out the best service interval for your vehicle and driving needs!

06/21/2022

When you’re sitting at a stoplight, or slowing down to a stop, your car’s idle should be nice and smooth. If it’s idling roughly, that’s your vehicle’s way of telling you there’s something wrong. Many problems can cause rough idling, including spark plug issues, corroded spark plug wires, a bad ignition coil, faulty piston rings or valves, or the wrong mixture of fuel and air.

Take note of when the problem is happening; is the engine hot or cold? Does it occur when you’re accelerating? Or does it only while you’re driving at a steady speed? Although we’re equipped with the latest diagnostic tools and equipment, any additional info you can give us will help point us in the right direction and resolve the issue quicker!

06/15/2022

Next to the engine, your transmission is the most expensive component in your vehicle. The transmission system is made of many moving parts that are cooled and lubricated by transmission fluid; once the fluid becomes old or contaminated, it can cause the passageways to become blocked–which also affects how your vehicle shifts gears. Dirty transmission fluid also becomes more acidic over time, which can cause issues like corroded gaskets, seals, and internal leaks.

This is why it’s so important to have your transmission serviced at regular intervals. Manufacturers’ recommendations can vary, so check your owner’s manual, or feel free to give us a call and we can look the service intervals up for you! For more information on how transmissions work or how to know your transmission needs to be serviced, be sure to check out our blog: https://bit.ly/3Nt4gEr.

When’s the last time your car had a tune-up? In addition to routine maintenance, tune-ups include thorough inspections of important automotive systems, like the ignition, filters, belts, hoses, and fluids. These important inspections are designed to catch problems–or developing issues–and help you prevent expensive repairs and safety concerns. Tune-ups are an important key for a long-lasting vehicle, so check with your service advisor to find out when your car is due.
