The family behind a longtime locally owned pizza and party store business is making a bet that customers will be happy to find their favorites in their favorite grocery stores, too.

Roseville-based pizza and sandwich chain Buscemi’s has launched a new company, Buscemi Retail Group, to develop and distribute company-branded packaged foods to retailers, beginning with a Detroit-style frozen pizza and jarred sauces. The move marks the first major diversification of the business since the The Original Buscemi’s began franchising in 1974, nearly 20 years after its founding in 1956.

The new company arm is led by a new generation. Co-owner Stephanie Buscemi runs the retail arm alongside her sister-in-law, Natalie Buscemi-Fox. Buscemi’s CEO Tony Buscemi is involved primarily as a product adviser and taste tester.

“My dad started the original company and we built the franchise model from there,” said Tony Buscemi, the owner and CEO of Buscemi Enterprises Inc. “But when we started working on bringing our pizza into retail, we realized it made sense to create a separate company focused just on consumer products.”
