The Golf Country's raised body wasn't an owner's suspension conversion. VW put a four door syncro body on a subframe, with the spare wheel behind the tailgate, and production ended after 7,735 cars.

The Golf G60 Limited came from VW's motorsport operation in 1989. Workers largely built the black cars by hand, combining a supercharged 16 valve engine with drive to all four wheels. Production stopped at 71 cars rather than becoming an ordinary GTI run.

The Mk2 GTI began with 112 PS before the Golf GTI 16V entered production in March 1986. Four valves per cylinder and two overhead camshafts came with the change, and the version without a catalytic converter produced 139 PS.
