A lot of expensive car repairs start as relatively cheap maintenance that was put off. The biggest “don’t delay” items are:

* Engine oil and filter changes – Dirty oil accelerates engine wear and can eventually cause catastrophic engine failure.
* Timing belt/chain (where applicable) – A missed timing belt replacement can destroy an engine in seconds.
* DPF issues (diesel vehicles) – Don’t ignore frequent regenerations, warning lights, or limp mode. Early diagnosis or a proper DPF clean is far cheaper than replacing the DPF or damaging the turbo.
* Regular servicing – Following the manufacturer’s service schedule catches small issues before they become major repairs.
* Tyres – Replace worn tyres, maintain correct pressures, and have wheel alignment checked if wear is uneven. This improves safety and extends tyre life.
* Brakes – Worn pads can quickly damage brake discs, turning a relatively inexpensive job into a much costlier repair.
* Coolant system – Low coolant, leaks, or an overheating engine should never be ignored. Overheating can warp the cylinder head or blow the head gasket.
* Battery and charging system – A weak battery or failing alternator can leave you stranded and may damage electrical systems.
* Transmission fluid – Many manufacturers call it “lifetime” fluid, but changing it at sensible intervals can significantly extend gearbox life.
* Suspension and steering – Worn shocks, ball joints, or bushes affect handling and can increase tyre wear.
* Air and fuel filters – Clean filters help maintain performance, fuel economy, and engine longevity.
* Warning lights – Check Engine, oil pressure, coolant temperature, ABS, or battery lights should be diagnosed promptly rather than ignored.

The general rule is simple: preventive maintenance almost always costs less than corrective repairs. Spending £100–£500 on maintenance today can easily prevent repair bills of several thousand pounds later.

Skip a simple oil change and might cause long term issues for your vehicle.

A blocked DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) can cause a range of serious problems if it isn’t dealt with. As the blockage gets worse, exhaust gases can’t flow properly, increasing back pressure in the engine. This can lead to:

* Reduced engine power and poor acceleration (often “limp mode”)
* Increased fuel consumption
* Frequent regeneration attempts, which can dilute the engine oil with diesel
* Turbocharger damage due to excessive exhaust back pressure
* Higher engine temperatures that can stress engine components
* Failure of sensors such as exhaust pressure or temperature sensors
* In severe cases, damage to the DPF itself, the turbo, or even the engine

If the DPF warning light comes on, it’s best to address it promptly. Sometimes a long drive at sustained motorway speeds can allow the DPF to regenerate if the blockage is only mild. If it’s heavily blocked, the vehicle may need a forced regeneration, professional cleaning, or, in some cases, DPF replacement.

Ignoring a blocked DPF can turn a relatively inexpensive repair into a much more costly one.
