DARK PATCH UNDER YOUR CAR EVERY MORNING?

Don’t just move the car and forget about it.

A dark, oily patch underneath your vehicle could be a sign of an engine oil leak. Even a small leak can become a bigger problem if it’s left unchecked.

Common causes can include:

🔧 Worn seals or gaskets
🔧 A leaking sump or sump plug
🔧 Oil filter issues
🔧 Damage to engine components

Ignoring an oil leak can lead to low oil levels, poor lubrication and potentially expensive engine damage.

Spot something suspicious on the driveway? Let us take a look and find the cause.

YOUR TYRES MIGHT HAVE PLENTY OF TREAD... BUT ARE THEY ACTUALLY SAFE?

Tread depth is important, but it’s not the only thing you should be checking.

A tyre can still have plenty of tread remaining and need replacing because of:

⚠️ Cracks or deterioration in the rubber
⚠️ Bulges or damage to the sidewall
⚠️ Cuts or exposed cords
⚠️ Uneven wear
⚠️ Damage caused by potholes or kerbs
⚠️ Age-related deterioration

So, a quick glance at the tread doesn’t always tell the full story.

If you’re unsure about the condition of your tyres, bring your vehicle to Graham Reader and we’ll help make sure they’re safe for the road.

SUMMER HOLIDAY DRIVING CONFESSIONS...

We’ve all done at least one of these on a long summer journey!

Which are you guilty of?

➡️Packing the car like you’re moving house
➡️Missing the turning despite having sat nav
➡️Saying “we’ll get fuel at the next one”
➡️Taking control of the playlist and refusing requests
➡️Buying enough service station snacks to feed a small army
➡️Hearing “I need the toilet” five minutes after setting off
➡️Realising you’ve forgotten something when you’re already miles from home
➡️Arguing over directions even though the sat nav knows the way

Drop your summer driving confession in the comments!

Got a puncture? It doesn't always mean you need a new tyre.

Whether a puncture can be repaired depends on where the damage is and the condition of the tyre. Repairs must follow the British Standard BS AU 159, which sets out strict safety guidelines.

In general, a puncture may be repairable if:

✅ The damage is within the central tread area.
✅ The puncture is small (typically up to 6mm).
✅ The tyre hasn't been driven on while flat.
✅ There is no damage to the sidewall or internal structure.

A tyre cannot be safely repaired if:

❌ The puncture is in the sidewall or shoulder.
❌ The internal structure has been damaged.
❌ The tyre has multiple previous repairs in unsuitable locations.
❌ The damage falls outside the British Standard.

The safest option is to have your tyre professionally inspected. We'll always advise whether a safe repair is possible or if replacement is the better option.

Is your car trying to tell you something?

If you've noticed your car is using more fuel than usual, taking longer to start, or just doesn't feel as responsive, worn spark plugs could be the cause.

Common signs of worn spark plugs include:

🔧 Poor fuel economy.
🔧 Difficulty starting the engine.
🔧 Sluggish acceleration or reduced performance.
🔧 Engine misfires or rough idling.
🔧 Engine management light appearing.

Spark plugs are a small component, but they play a big part in keeping your engine running efficiently. Replacing them at the recommended service interval can improve performance, fuel economy and reliability.

If your vehicle is showing any of these symptoms, let our experienced team take a look and get you back on the road with confidence.

Five minutes under the bonnet could save you hours on the roadside.

Before heading off on a long journey, take a moment to check these essential vehicle fluids:

🛢️ Engine Oil: Keeps your engine lubricated and protected.
🌡️ Coolant: Prevents your engine from overheating.
💧 Screenwash: Essential for clear visibility, especially on long motorway drives.
🛑 Brake Fluid: Helps ensure your braking system performs safely and effectively.
⚙️ Power Steering Fluid (where applicable): Keeps your steering smooth and responsive.
🔧 AdBlue (diesel vehicles that require it): Running low can prevent your vehicle from restarting once the tank is empty.

Not sure what to look for or simply don't have the time? Our experienced team can carry out a quick vehicle health check and make sure everything is topped up and ready for your journey.

Tyre blowouts are far more common during hot weather than most drivers realise.

As temperatures rise, so does the temperature inside your tyres. Add motorway speeds, heavy loads, low tyre pressures or existing tyre damage, and the risk of a blowout increases significantly.

The good news? Most blowouts don't happen without warning.

✔️ Check your tyre pressures regularly
✔️ Inspect tyres for cuts, cracks and bulges
✔️ Keep an eye on tread depth
✔️ Don't overload your vehicle
✔️ Have your tyres inspected if you're unsure

A five-minute check today could save you a dangerous roadside breakdown tomorrow.
