Since we originally posted this almost 12 months ago, the cost of vehicle parts has continued to rise — and that now includes certain types of engine oil.
There’s also another cost that many customers may not be aware of: manufacturer security gateways and access tokens.
Modern vehicles are becoming increasingly locked behind manufacturer systems, and independent garages often have to pay just to carry out procedures that used to be straightforward.
For example:
🔧 On certain Jeep, Fiat and other Stellantis vehicles, resetting a service warning can require manufacturer access costing us around £30–£50 per token.
🔧 On some newer VW Golfs, even unlocking the rear electronic brake calipers so we can replace the brake pads can require paid access costing around £45–£50 — with a 60-minute countdown to complete the procedure.
These costs are on top of diagnostic equipment, software subscriptions, tools, training, insurance, electricity, wages and all the other costs involved in running a modern workshop.
At the same time, the margins available to us on many genuine parts have become almost non-existent.
We understand that everyone wants to keep their repair bills as low as possible. But independent garages are dealing with rising costs too, while trying to keep prices fair.
We already work with tight margins. Please be kind enough not to ask us to make them even tighter.
