Here we have a 1989 944 Turbo. Essentially all 1989 Australian delivered turbos were of “S” spec but not called an S. They nearly all came delivered with M030 suspension and brakes, L*D, the forged anodised club sport wheels and sunroof. All were the larger turbocharger 250hp models. Now in this case the owner wants a bit more then what they came with new so we put in what we call our performance stage 1, boost controller, dual port wastegate, turbosmart recirculation valve and Vitesse chip. Bumps these up to around 350hp. The old M030 suspension was a bit tired and we have our go-to coil over kit. It’s the best bang for buck kit on the market where we can then run up rated springs and shocks. Lastly and not part of our kit is the S2 crown wheel and pinion upgrade. This girl is going to be just perfect when it leaves the shop

To install a new crown wheel and pinion you need to set up the pinion bearing preload and then the pinion depth. The pinion depth for all 944 S2 crown wheels and pinions is 59.65. Now on all new crown wheels is the silent running for that specific C&P. This is added into the equation and the pinion setting tool is set with the new number. In this case it would have been 59.65 + 47. We then adjust/add/minus the shims until we get it perfect. Next we set differential preload and finally backlash in a similar procedure with shims. You can see my work sheet as we progress through

By far one of the best modifications you can perform to your 944 turbo is the S2 crown wheel and pinion. The original 3.2 final drive is just too tall unless you actually have an autobahn. The S2 final drive of 3.8 is a sweet spot. It livens up the whole driving experience. While still retaining a top speed of approximately 276km/h as tested by my rev limit down Sydney Motorsport Park straight in our own 3.0ltr 16v 944 turbo

This power unit is complete and ready for reinstallation. While we did have the inlet manifold and cam covers repainted we decided against getting the hardware replated as the original 4x,###kms engine plating was in fantastic condition. Handy hint, the original yellow chromate is much more durable then the yellow zinc we can only get done these days

Just a little something we have been working on the last few weeks.before this Carrera GT heads out for paint we did a top end freshen up. Nuts bolts and brackets all got plated and the aluminium parts v***r blasted. Quite a bit of the tinware was corroded so they also got a blast and fresh paint. Will post up some more when we get the intercooler and some new reservoirs on
