NVES Explained: Why Australia’s Car Line-ups Are About to Change

Australia’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) is already influencing what car brands prioritise for our market, and it’s not just “EV people” who’ll notice. With models like the Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid to Toyota’s HiLux 48V system, electrification is moving into the mainstream models Australians regularly buy. In this quick video, I explain what’s happening behind the scenes, and why specialist servicing matters as these vehicles get more complex.

If you use a Level 1 EV charger, it’s important to routinely check the connections.
Level 1 chargers are a convenient option, but long charging periods can place extra strain on the equipment. Make sure you regularly inspect the plugs and connectors for any signs of overheating, burning, or arcing.

Toyota Prius Hybrid Battery Repair
Toyota NiMH batteries have stood the test of time, proving to be a robust and reliable battery technology, but like any battery it still suffers from degradation due to age, heat, cycles and physical electrolyte leakage. When one or two battery modules start to fall off the degradation cliff, bringing the whole battery pack capacity down, it is inevitable that other modules, which have endured the same conditions will follow in the months or years to follow. The very specific customer case in this video required only a handful of months out of this battery to suit the customers situation–otherwise, the labour to access and disassemble the battery for a repair like this is more often not worth the time involved vs the better long-term value of fitting new or OEM aftermarket cells. In this video, we unbox a brand-new high-voltage NiMH hybrid battery for a Lexus RX450h and highlight the key design differences compared to other Toyota hybrid batteries. You will notice components like the Battery Management System (BMS) and pre-charge circuitry need to be transferred over before installation.
While genuine Toyota/Lexus batteries offer the best long-term value and reliability, aftermarket new cell and reconditioned battery solutions are available and may suit different vehicle needs or budgets.
