Rated to tow and set up to tow are two very different things. πŸ‘‡

Part 2 of our towing series β€” here's what actually changes between driving it off the lot and being ready for the road.
Suspension first. Factory setup is built for smooth roads and a weekend away. Add a canopy, drawers, fuel, water and a 2,500kg trailer and the rear sags, headlights point at the sky and the vehicle wanders. A kit matched to your loaded weight fixes all of it.
Brakes next β€” and most people skip this. Factory brakes handle a few hundred kilometres fine. Tow a 3 tonne van down the Great Dividing Range for two hours and you'll feel exactly why this matters. Upgraded pads, a proper electric brake controller and a weight distribution hitch sort it.
Payload last β€” but price it in early. A GVM upgrade isn't a mod. It's a legal requirement once you've added canopies, drawers, batteries, water tanks and a full tow load. Most touring 300s, RAMs and Patrols end up needing one.

$150K of truck doesn't mean it's ready to tour. Here's where to actually spend your money. πŸ‘‡

But first β€” check your payload before anything else. The 300 eats it fast. If you're over GVM loaded up for touring, that's a legal issue before it's a capability one. Sort it first.

Then, in order πŸ‘‡

1️⃣ Suspension β€” the single biggest improvement for most 300 owners. Factory setup runs out of capability the moment you load it for touring.

2️⃣ Tyres β€” the factory rubber is the weak link. Maxxis Razr, BFG KO3, Toyo Open Country. Puncture resistance and gravel confidence the 300 should have left the showroom with.

3️⃣ Bull bar and driving lights β€” animal strikes are real. Night driving fatigue is real. Winch-compatible bar gives you self recovery anywhere.

4️⃣ Dual battery β€” fridge, lights, devices. Most people don't realise how useful it is until they've got one.

5️⃣ UHF β€” cheapest mod on the list. Earns its keep on every single trip.

Suspension and tyres alone unlock about half the truck's potential. Everything else builds from there.

Your diesel's intake is slowly choking itself. And you can't see it happening. ⚠️
Blow-by gas carries oil vapour straight back through your intake system every time you drive. Carbon builds. Performance drops. Most people don't find out until something expensive breaks.

πŸ“Š GCM β€” Car and van combined. This is your hard ceiling.οΏ½ πŸ“Š GVM β€” Car, accessories, people, fuel, gear and ball weight. All of it counts.οΏ½ πŸ“Š BTC β€” A GVM upgrade doesn't automatically raise your towing capacity. You may need a brake towing capacity upgrade too.
Now match the vehicle to what you're towing πŸ‘‡
1500kg camper and a Prado 250 heading to Cape York? No dramas.οΏ½ 3 tonne van on the back of a Prado? Wrong tool for the job.
300 Series and Ram 1500 are built for the big vans. Better cooling, bigger motors, higher GCM.
Dark horse pick β€” Y62 Patrol. 5.6L V8, more than capable. Just budget for fuel.
