I have repaired a lot of airhead gearboxes with broken shifter pawl springs. I always replace the $2.75 spring during rebuilds. This is the first time I have found a pawl spring that was cracked but not broken, but it would have soon!

Pre 1970 model owners: While having your oil slingers cleaned is expensive, the damage being done to the connecting rod roller bearings will cost far more. If you don’t know when it was last done, it is something to really consider!
