Most 6L80E failures we see had a warning window nobody used.

If you've got a 2007–2020 GM truck or SUV — Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Escalade — you're driving a 6-speed with a lot of known behavior. And a lot of that behavior is addressable long before anything comes apart.

A few of the possibilities we look at, and most owners have never heard of any of them:

Programming and calibration. GM has released updates for these units over the years that change shift and converter-apply behavior. A truck running old software can shift like something's wrong when nothing is.

Adaptive learning. These transmissions adapt to how they've been driven and to wear as it happens. Those adaptives can drift off. A relearn done properly can clean up shift quality that owners assume is a dying transmission.

Fluid. What was correct when your truck left the factory isn't necessarily what's correct now. Fluid chemistry for these units has been revised, and the wrong or worn fluid is one of the fastest ways to take out a torque converter.

Cooling. Heat kills these. If you tow, haul, or run a plow, upgraded external cooling is one of the cheapest things you can do to add years to the unit.

None of that is a driveway job, and none of it is guesswork — it takes a specialist with transmission-only tools to know which of these actually applies to your vehicle. That's the whole point. We do one thing, all day, and we've been doing it on 4th Street for 50+ years.

Start with a free No-Wrench Evaluation: a road test and a computer scan for an honest read on where your 6-speed stands. If it needs deeper diagnostics beyond that, we tell you the cost first and get your okay. No surprises.

And if it does turn out you need a unit — we keep 6L80E transmissions in stock for '07–'20 GM trucks. On the shelf, not on backorder.

Major or minor, we'll know.

We love seeing vintage muscle cars out in the wild, and when this beauty pulled up next to us, we couldn't resist snapping a photo!

Our best guess is that it's a 1969 Plymouth GTX, possibly equipped with the legendary Air Grabber hood. Are we right, or do we have any Mopar experts who can set us straight?

Either way, it's an absolutely gorgeous piece of American muscle. Thanks to the owner for keeping classics like this on the road where they belong!

If you know the year, engine, or any other details, let us know in the comments! We'd love to hear more about it.

When your automatic transmission starts acting up, don't guess—go to a specialist.

At Jim's Transmission Service, we don't work on everything. We specialize in automatic transmissions. That's been our focus for over 50 years.

Because transmissions are all we do, we have the experience, specialized diagnostic equipment, and knowledge to accurately diagnose the problem. And here's something many people don't realize: not every transmission problem requires a complete rebuild or replacement.

Choosing a specialist can save you time, money, and unnecessary repairs.

If your transmission isn't shifting right, is slipping, making noise, or has the check engine light on, let our team take a look.
