Most people don't know a repair shop will detail their car. We do.

Interiors are where the time goes. The cargo area gets hit with compressed air first, so the dirt down in the carpet seams and the corners comes up instead of getting pushed further in. Seats fold down and the whole back end gets opened up before any of it gets cleaned.

You can drop it off for a detail on its own, or have it done while it's already here for something else.

Morgan has been learning the service advisor side of the counter.

Parts lookups, repair orders, the phones. Matt walks her through it on live work, and the goal is that anyone in the shop can sit down and run it.

The other half of that seat is the customer standing right there. Findings get pulled up on the screen and gone through — what was found, what it means, what the options are — before any of it gets approved.

A red BMW 318i, in for a clutch kit.

Bilstein shocks, Eibach lowering springs, an M-Tech front bumper, and an M-style rear spoiler are going on with it. Drivetrain, suspension, and body on one work order.

Older cars with aftermarket parts going on them aren't a standard job, and a lot of shops pass on that kind of work.

Rock chips too. If it's caught while it's still a chip, that's usually a repair instead of a replacement. Once it starts running, that decision gets made for you.

The school year changes how a car gets driven.

Most of it turns into short trips. A few miles in the morning, a few miles back in the afternoon, in weather that keeps getting colder. A three-mile run often doesn't give an engine time to reach full operating temperature, and it doesn't always give the battery long enough to recover what starting the car took out of it.

Tires get measured for depth and pressure, and looked at for how evenly they've worn. Brakes mean pads, rotors, and the fluid nobody thinks about. Belts and hoses get checked for cracking and seepage. Most of that is only visible with the car in the air.

None of it announces itself. An inspection is how you find out.

You don't see a fuel filter doing its job.

Old on the left, new on the right, both out of a light-duty diesel. The old one is black all the way around. That's what it pulled out of the fuel before any of it reached the engine.

The new one goes in white and starts over.

It's a maintenance item. It gets replaced on a schedule, not after something goes wrong.

On a Subaru, that job means the motor comes out. Once it's out and apart, both sides get resealed — not just the one that was leaking. Doing one and leaving the other means paying for the same teardown a second time down the road, and there's no reason to set someone up for that.

Diagnose it right. Fix it right. Keep it moving.

Detail work gets judged on the parts you never look at from the driver's seat.

Nate pulled the mats out of this Titan and blew them clean with air, vacuumed the interior, and washed the truck.

Nothing about that is complicated. It's time. And there's no way to take the time back out of it without it showing.
