Check Engine Light and Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)

Determining what's wrong with your car is often quite difficult and involved. When a check engine light or ABS light or air bag light lights up, the first thing we do is to read the trouble codes with our shop computer (an expensive piece of equipment). The codes we receive from several on board computers in the car tell us what system has experienced the problem. This code does not always tell us exactly what failed, so further diagnosis is often necessary. For example, we had an ABS light on. The trouble code said that the left front wheel speed sensor had no signal. We tested the speed sensor and found it to be working properly. So, we determined that the signal from the speed sensor to the ABS Control unit (ABS computer) was not being received. That left either a bad wire or a bad ABS control unit. We check the wire for continuity and determined that the ABS control unit was bad. We replaced it and all was well again. It took several steps beyond reading the code to determine the source of the problem. It's not magic and we don't have magic wands. It's work.

Rats and Cars.
Did you know that rats and mice can cause severe damage to your automobile? They often nest inside the warm engine at night and chew insulation and electrical wiring. I've had to replace several wiring harnesses for customers. Suggestions to keep the rodents away: place moth balls in a container under the hood; one customer told me he uses a bar of Irish Spring soap in the engine compartment; a large, hungry cat might be a worthwhile investment. Any other ideas out there?
