We’re honored to be part of Lubbock County history! ❤️

Join us Thursday, August 20, at 9:00 AM as we celebrate the dedication and unveiling of the Texas Historical Marker recognizing 80 years of Lubbock Auto Auction.

We’re incredibly proud of the history behind LAA and can’t wait to celebrate this milestone with our dealers, community, and everyone who has been part of our story over the years! 🎉

When local car dealers Jack and Clyde McLaughlin opened Lubbock Automobile Auction at 27th Street and Texas Avenue with its first sale in 1947, everyone was ready for a new car! Throughout the years of rationing during World War II, the only option most people had was to continue to drive the car they owned in 1941. By 1947 the McLaughlins noticed the trend of more and more used cars on the market and had an idea. The Lubbock Automobile Auction, open to dealers only, had its first sale on Thursday, October 2nd. The sales’ success led to regular auctions every Thursday.

With their new business model in place, Lubbock Automobile Auction became a valuable resource for all dealers, large and small, and through them helped ensure options for the car-buying public. Although many of the car brands in their sales, such as Fords, Chevrolets, Cadillacs, and Oldsmobiles are still familiar ones, others of the time like DeSotos, Packards, Nashes, Commanders, Studebakers, Mercuries, and Diamonds are better known only to antique automobile enthusiasts today. In 1951, Ray Furr bought the business, renamed it Lubbock Auto Auction, and moved it to its current location 1122 East 34th Street, then “outside” of town and surrounded by cotton fields.

The Lubbock County Historical Commission will unveil a Texas Historical Marker on Thursday, August 20 at 9 a.m., recognizing the Lubbock Auto Auction at 1122 East 34th Street. The dedication ceremony will take place inside the facility on the auction floor, rarely open to the public, to celebrate the business’ eighth decade. The public is invited to attend.
