Things Coloradans Keep in Their Cars That Confuse Everyone Else

Colorado drivers are a little different.

In some states, people keep a phone charger, sunglasses, and maybe a few fast-food napkins in their car. Around Longmont and the northern Front Range, your vehicle might contain an ice scraper, sunscreen, hiking shoes, dog gear, emergency snacks, reusable bags, a jacket for three seasons, and one random rock someone swore they were going to bring inside.

And honestly? That is not weird. That is just Colorado.

Between cold mornings, sunny afternoons, foothills drives, school pickups, work commutes, gravel roads, snow, wind, hail, and weekend adventures, our cars do more than get us from point A to point B. They become mobile gear closets, snack stations, dog shuttles, and weather survival kits.

But while it is smart to be prepared, your vehicle needs to be ready too.

At All American Auto Repair of Longmont, even Dolly the dog knows: funny stuff is fine, but serious car care matters.

1. The Ice Scraper That Never Leaves

Every Colorado driver knows the rule: the minute you take the ice scraper out of your car, it will snow.

It does not matter if it is May. It does not matter if yesterday was warm enough for short sleeves. That scraper stays.

Your vehicle notices those temperature swings too. Cold mornings and warm afternoons can affect tire pressure, battery performance, fluids, belts, and hoses. If your tire pressure light comes on after a chilly night, your car may not be overreacting.

Car care tip: Check tire pressure regularly, especially during big temperature changes. Proper inflation helps with traction, fuel economy, handling, and tire wear.

2. Emergency Snacks That Are Not Really for Emergencies

Granola bars, trail mix, crackers, jerky, fruit snacks, and at least one snack that has been in the glove box longer than anyone wants to admit.

Around Longmont, a quick errand can turn into a longer drive thanks to weather, construction, traffic, or a spontaneous trip toward the foothills. Snacks are practical. Sometimes they are also lunch.

But your vehicle needs its own version of emergency preparation: clean fluids, a strong battery, dependable brakes, working lights, good tires, and wipers that actually clear the windshield.

Car care tip: Before longer drives, mountain trips, or busy seasonal driving, have your fluids, brakes, tires, battery, and wipers checked.

3. Hiking Shoes, Snow Boots, and Flip-Flops

Only in Colorado does it make perfect sense to keep footwear for three different climates in the same car.

Morning frost? Boots.
Afternoon sunshine? Flip-flops.
Weekend trail? Hiking shoes.
Surprise snow? Boots again.

Your tires deal with the same Colorado mood swings. Dry pavement, wet roads, slush, gravel, potholes, and sudden weather all demand good traction and even tire wear.

Car care tip: Watch for uneven tread wear, low tread depth, cracks, vibrations, or pulling to one side. These can point to tire, alignment, steering, or suspension issues.

4. Dog Gear, Approved by Dolly

Leash. Backup leash. Water bowl. Towel. Treats. Seat cover. Tennis ball. More dog hair than seems possible.

For many Longmont drivers, the dog is not cargo. The dog is the co-pilot.

Dolly approves of prepared vehicles, but pet life can be rough on your car. Dirt, dust, hair, mud, and moisture can build up fast. That can affect your cabin air filter, interior air quality, and heating and air conditioning airflow.

Car care tip: If your vents smell musty, airflow feels weak, or allergy season feels worse inside your car than outside, it may be time to check the cabin air filter.

5. A Jacket for Every Possible Weather Event

Light jacket. Heavy jacket. Hoodie. Rain shell. Emergency blanket. The “just in case” layer that saves the day.

This is not overpacking. This is Colorado.

Your vehicle also needs to be ready for changing conditions. Worn wiper blades, dim headlights, low washer fluid, old coolant, or a weak battery can turn a normal drive into a stressful one quickly.

Car care tip: Keep washer fluid topped off, replace streaky wiper blades, and make sure your exterior lights are clean and working.

6. Reusable Bags, Random Rocks, and Mystery Items

Colorado cars collect things.

Reusable grocery bags. Trail maps. Kids’ sports gear. Coffee mugs. Parking passes. A rock from a hike. Possibly three rocks from three hikes.

A little clutter may be harmless, but it can make warning signs easier to miss. New rattles, strange smells, damp floor mats, fluid leaks, warning lights, or changes in how your vehicle drives should not be ignored.

Car care tip: Pay attention to new sounds, smells, leaks, warning lights, or changes in braking, steering, or handling. Small issues are often easier to address early.

7. Sunscreen and an Ice Scraper in the Same Door Pocket

This might be the most Colorado thing of all.

Sunburn and frost can happen close enough together to confuse anyone who just moved here. Those quick changes are hard on rubber parts, seals, belts, hoses, batteries, and tires.

Car care tip: Seasonal inspections are a smart habit for northern Front Range drivers. Spring, fall, and before big trips are great times to make sure your vehicle is ready.

Your Car Is Part of Your Colorado Gear

You would not head out with worn-out shoes, no water, and a backpack full of wishful thinking.

Your vehicle deserves the same attention.

Whether your car is hauling kids, dogs, groceries, tools, bikes, camping gear, sports equipment, or all of the above, regular maintenance helps keep it safe, reliable, and ready for the next drive.

If your vehicle has a warning light, strange noise, weak battery, shaky brakes, worn tires, or it simply has not had a good checkup in a while, schedule an appointment with All American Auto Repair of Longmont.

Dolly may approve of the snacks, but we will help make sure your vehicle is ready for every mile.
