Is it safe to drive with unbalanced tires? Every article online repeats the same line - "2 to 3 months, it depends" - and none of them tell you what it depends on. ⚠️

Here's the truth: "unbalanced" is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A thrown wheel weight buys you a couple of months. But a bent rim, a separated belt, or an already-cupped tire feels identical and is NOT safe to ride out.

The tell? A real imbalance shakes in a 40-55 mph band and smooths out above and below it. Anything that shakes at every speed - or keeps getting worse - is something else.

"Slightly bent" isn't a feeling. It's a number, and it's about thirty thousandths of an inch.

That's what your manufacturer allows for runout. Roughly ten sheets of paper. Under it you feel nothing. Over sixty thousandths and you've got a shake you can't ignore. Any tire shop with a road force balancer will tell you yours in about ninety seconds, usually free. Every article that talks about "slightly bent" vs "severely bent" is dodging that number.

And here's the one nobody tells you: your alloy wheel is T6 heat treated, and that temper is where most of its strength lives. Cold aluminum won't bend back, so shops warm it up. Heat it past the aging range and you over-age the alloy. It comes back perfectly round, balances beautifully, and is permanently weaker than it was. Nothing about it looks wrong.

It doesn't vary. It comes down to two numbers.

Number one is the rate. Losing 1 PSI a month isn't a leak, that's permeation, every tire does it. 1-2 PSI a week is a small leak. 3 PSI a day is local driving only. 10 PSI an hour is a tow.

Number two is 25% below the placard on your door jamb. Below that, the rate stops mattering. That's the same 25% that trips your TPMS light, which means the light isn't an early warning. It's the threshold.

Lost a lug nut? Every article you've read says "it depends" and then never tells you what it depends on.

It depends on your lug count. A 5-lug wheel down one nut has lost 20% of its clamp load. A 4-lug has lost 25%. An 8-lug dually has lost 12.5%. Those are three different cars and three different answers, and nobody's giving you the table.
