We are heartbroken by the loss of retired LPD Officer Chris Jones.

Master Police Officer Chris Jones, who at the time of his retirement in 2010, was a veteran law enforcement professional with more than 25 years in public service. He began his career with the George Mason University campus police in 1984 and worked there for two years before joining the Leesburg Police Department in 1986. While serving as a police officer, he advanced through the ranks to eventually become the Field Operations Division Captain in September of 1995. He served in that capacity for three years before pursuing a position with the U.S. Department of Justice, working in the Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) office as a grant monitor. He realized his desire to return to local law enforcement and joined the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in June of 1999 and served as a patrol deputy and was assigned to their Community Policing Unit until January of 2003. After an unsuccessful bid for Sheriff of Loudoun County, Chris rejoined the Leesburg Police Department in June of 2004.

MPO Jones’ career could be best described as one of positive influence and intricately impactful in the evolution of the Leesburg Police Department. He joined the agency when there were only about twenty officers. Since then that number has more than quadrupled. He became the first full time narcotics investigator and joined the other two members of what was then the Major Crimes Section in September of 1989. Chris was charged with leading the change from the traditional model of policing to community policing when Chief Keith Stiles was appointed in July of 1995. Chris’ motivation and positive outlook made him a natural selection to spearhead this initiative. Chris realized the importance of community and agency partnerships and developed strong relationships with many of our community members. This led him to be an integral member of the North East Coalition which focused mainly on quality of life issues in the NE quadrant of the Town of Leesburg.

Upon his return to LPD in June of 2004, he went back to patrol and was later appointed to be a General Assignment Detective. In January of 2006, MPO Jones was selected to represent the agency as the first full time academy instructor at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy in Ashburn, VA. His assignment to the academy was a perfect fit due to his passion and desire to teach and instill the core beliefs of integrity, compassion, empathy and fairness to the new recruits. He received numerous awards and commendations during his tenure at the academy and throughout his career. During his final years at the agency he served as a background investigator, recruiter, training coordinator and Public Information Officer.

We remember MPO Chris Jones for his commitment to excellence, never-ending optimism and his encouraging smile. Chris managed to work for over a quarter of a century in law enforcement and was always adamant that his glass was half full rather than half empty.

Chris, we are each better for having known you. Until we meet again…
