🚗 Tips to Take Care of Your Engine in Cold Weather
Use good-quality antifreeze (coolant):
Make sure your cooling system has the right mix — 50% coolant and 50% distilled water.
Quality coolant prevents the liquid from freezing inside the radiator or engine.
It also protects against internal corrosion and helps keep the engine temperature stable.
Check your coolant level regularly:
If it’s low or dirty (brownish color or residue), replace it.
In very cold climates, use special antifreeze that protects down to -35°C (-31°F) or lower.
Warm up the engine before driving:
Let it idle for 2 to 5 minutes before moving, especially if temperatures are below freezing.
This allows the oil to circulate and lubricate all parts of the engine before it starts working hard.
No need to leave it running too long (more than 10 minutes just wastes gas).
Avoid hard acceleration when it’s cold:
Drive gently until the engine reaches its normal temperature (around 90°C / 195°F).
This helps reduce engine wear and saves fuel.

The radiator fluid can freeze, expand, and crack the radiator or engine block.

It causes extra wear on pistons, valves, and bearings.

A block heater (electric engine heater).
Low-temperature motor oil, such as 5W-30 or 0W-20, depending on your car’s manual.
