Autocross with Canterbury Car Club end of August, had a busy week so didn’t get a chance to write up results with the changes to the car! But here it is
With the changes made, the car felt more lively, quicker on acceleration, braking and change of direction through the tight chicanes, it felt like an MX5 again!
The day started off quite cold, we ran some older 225/45/15 NanKang AR1s, bit old, 2024 tyres, but they were on a street car so wouldn’t have seen too many heat cycles. First time running these on track, after hearing some great reviews on them.
The tyres came up to temp towards the end of the 1st run, because the number of drivers were a bit lower, we managed to go out without the tyres completely cooling off, the car felt more planted with the warmer tyres. Though i wonder if we were still outside of their optimal temps.
In my effort to find more time on the last run of course 1, I managed to smack a cone and gained a 5s penalty plus the slowing down to minimise damage. Car and cone was not harmed!
Course 2 it was a short course, and the tyre temps didn’t really come on, played around with tyre pressures and the rear wing between each run, to try and understand the aero side of things, but wasn’t able to find a heap of time to close the gap to the leaders, we weren’t losing too much to the rest of the pack either.
By the third course we decided to go out and have some fun, with the gap to 5th place pretty safe, we were able to take passenger rides and get the car fairly sideways through most of the course! That definitely scratched the drift itch, it was very fast on the AR1s.
We managed a 4th place for the day, decent, and we put some smiles on some passengers, there is still plenty of learning and development to go into this car, it will be a slow process but I’m looking forward to the learning!
Big thanks to the car club for putting on such an amazing event, the team in the Chch workshop for helping me get this thing ready, and of course Tania NGAGE Motorsport Photography for the sick photos!
Looking forward to the next and final tarmac event in October!
