A proper battery test takes about five minutes and tells you whether your battery has the cold-cranking amps to start your car on a frosty Christchurch morning, or whether it's about to leave you stranded.

If you can't remember when you last replaced your car battery, it's probably time to check. The rough rule for Christchurch winters: three years is when most batteries start to weaken, five years is when most fail. There's usually a date stamp on the battery itself, a sticker or a code punched into the top, telling you roughly when it was made. If you can't find it or can't read it, that's a sign the battery has been in there long enough to be worth testing. Cold weather is what exposes a weak battery, not what causes it. A battery that's been quietly degrading all year will start fine in summer and refuse to crank on the first frost. Better to know now than find out in a supermarket carpark in July.

If you've ever tried to clear a frozen Christchurch windscreen by running the wipers, you've probably done more damage than you realised. The blades drag across the ice instead of sliding over water, and the edge of the rubber tears against the frozen surface. Worse: if the blades are frozen to the glass, the motor can strain hard enough to damage the linkage or burn out the wiper motor itself. The right way to clear a frozen windscreen is from inside, with the demister running, while you scrape the outside with a proper ice scraper. Five minutes of patience saves a wiper motor replacement and a set of new blades. The wipers are there to clear rain, not ice.

The sign that your battery is on its way out before it actually fails is a slow cranking. If the engine takes longer to turn over than it used to, especially on cold mornings, the battery is struggling.

An old battery will overload the alternator and the charging system which can cause more problems over time.

This on a Christchurch winter morning means you're one cold night away from a no-start. The good news: a battery test can identify the battery's health condition.

Wipers: do they clear the screen in one pass without streaks?

Tyres: tread depth above 3mm and even wear across the surface?

Fluids: coolant topped up, washer reservoir full?

Lights: all working, including the rear fog and reverse?

Five minutes in the driveway now saves a roadside breakdown later. If anything looks off, get it checked before it becomes a problem.

Before you head to the ski fields this winter, run through a proper pre-road-trip check. Tyres: tread depth, pressure cold, condition of sidewalls, and the spare. Fluids: coolant, oil, brake fluid, washer fluid. Brakes: any new noises, soft pedal, or pulling to one side. Lights: all working, including high beam and fogs. Wipers and demister: both working properly. Battery: cold starts strong, no slow crank. Snow chains if your route requires them, and know how to fit them.

Mountain driving in winter is harder on the car than any other driving you'll do; long climbs, hard descents, cold soaks overnight, sudden temperature changes. Cars take longer to warm up in winter, and most of the time it's completely normal - but there's a point where slow warm-up is telling you something is wrong.

Normal: a cold engine takes five to ten minutes to reach proper operating temperature on a frosty Christchurch morning. The heater inside the cabin only gets properly hot once the engine has warmed up, which is why blowing cold air for the first few minutes is expected.

Not normal: the engine reaches temperature but the cabin stays cold, or the temperature gauge climbs much more slowly than it used to, or the engine never gets fully warm even on longer drives.

Those can be a sign of a faulty thermostat, a low coolant level, or a heater core issue.

Worth a check before winter properly arrives.

The legal tyre tread limit in New Zealand is 1.5mm, but the safe limit for wet winter driving is closer to 3mm. There's a real-world difference. Tread channels exist to displace water - when the grooves are deep, water gets pushed out from under the tyre and the rubber stays in contact with the road. When the grooves are shallow, the water has nowhere to go, and the tyre starts to plane across the surface instead of gripping it. On wet Canterbury roads in winter, the difference between 3mm of tread and 1.5mm of tread can be the difference between stopping in time and not. The legal limit is the floor, not the goal. Worth a quick check before winter properly bites.

If your wipers smear, streak or judder across the windscreen, they're done.

The 30-second test most Christchurch drivers can do themselves: clean the windscreen, spray a bit of water on it, run the wipers once. If the glass clears in a single smooth pass, you're fine. If you see streaks, missed strips, or hear a chattering sound, the rubber has hardened and they need replacing.

Wipers wear out quietly - most people don't notice until heavy rain hits during the morning commute and visibility drops to nothing. New blades for most cars don't take long to fit. We carry stock for common makes and can swap them out on the spot. Worth doing before the next southerly front rolls in.
