Offering a complete tuning service has always been BSD Performance’s goal and our fully equipped workshop, engine building room and Dyno all play a key part in producing reliable, rideable motorcycles, road or race, that are not only a vast improvement over stock but also live up to expectation. We use a Dynojet 250i Load Control rolling road Dynomometer and the ability it gives, to control engine

rpm at any throttle opening, is crucial for consistency and the precise build of a performance fuelling map. Ironically, the knowledge earned in the pre-fuel injection era, working on the Dyno with CV and flat slide carburettors has proved an invaluable foundation for everything we do with EFI. With regards engine tuning the first thing we do is find out what the customer is using the bike for, and what they actually want to achieve by uprating their engine’s output. Using our experience we then establish the expectations relative to application; road riders and club racers have very different needs and this part of the process is, we feel, one of the most important. Any motor that passes through our engine room is meticulously stripped, cleaned and, after the tuning work cleaned and patiently, methodically rebuilt. We take our time, and we take care.

And the heat goes on...

Especially in the BSD dyno room, where the often used expression "it's warm" is an understatement. It does seem as if the dynamometer (and remap guru Andy) has just five minutes rest before the next ECU remap customer arrives at BSD. And yet we still managed to squeeze in a dyno run for performance evaluation on the new Ducati DesertX.
This particular DesertX was on loan to a UK magazine, so you can read about it soon. But for all the folk who are really, really, really, really desperate to know what power and torque the standard bike made at the back wheel, Ride mag said we could post the dyno figures. So, here you go - fill your boots, people.

What a year so far! Record temperatures and bikes everywhere. We haven't stopped!

Andy and Cris have been (and still are) flat out. There have been plenty of challenges along the way, and it saddens me to say that Ducati has been at the top of the list of problem bikes this year. But, hey-ho, they're certainly not the only ones!
Cris has had his work cut out with a broad range of KTM models, as more and more owners find their way to us. Word has clearly got around that the top tech from former Gear4 is here.
As ever, Andy has had dyno work coming out of his ears. Euro 5 and Euro 5+ bikes can be a real challenge, but he always finds a way to deal with them. Some have had to stay a little longer while new software is written, but the results have been worth the wait.
Our new BSD Performance website goes live in late August, so keep an eye out for that, along with Trev's Facebook updates.
As always, I urge everyone to be vigilant when buying a secondhand bike. We've seen some real horrors again this year. One example was a £500 Facebook Marketplace purchase that ended up costing over £2,000 to repair!

On another note, BSD Engineering has grown over the last 29 years, with the past five years being our busiest yet. This has prompted us to invest in new CNC centres and other equally hi-tech machinery. We also require a CNC programmer/operator to ensure we continue to keep up with demand for our range of services. Memories are made of these...

The amount of people raised on a diet of two-stroke motorcycles from the 70's onwards must have been, well, huge! From mopeds to 750cc multis, biking life usually started with a stroker before moving up to large four-strokes.
And here's a nice picture to stir memory pots. And, hopefully, stimulate the younger generations, too. Not sure about you, but it's a poor state of affairs that today's up and coming riders will never experience the joys of cheap repairs - quite often from expansion chambers and wrong-sized jets - and masses of lightweight, screamer fun.

Hot, noisy , rider-friendly, powerful, and that's just the BSD team.

Needless to say, it's been yet another busy week in the dyno room with many, many BSD remaps. We started off on Monday with 3 Kawasaki Z900RS and a Z1000. It then got busier and included a healthy, tractable 201.8HP Kawsaki H2.
We also got to see a customer of BSD and his turbo-fired, drag-race Hayabusa. Yes, it's a road-going tool and needing just a few BSD tweaks for the owner to net its true capability! Mad man springs to mind.

Dry roads and sunshine means everybody is making use of their bikes. Good times indeed. But...
..More rides mean more miles are being racked up -- as one BSD customer found out to his cost, when his bike's service mileage indicator popped up way earlier than he expected. He was very greatful that we managed to get his bike turned around within a couple of days because he was due to leave for a tour of France!
With the good weather looking to last a bit longer, please check your mileages, and while you're at it, have a squint at the brake pads, tyre tread depth, chain and sprockets and more. We can accommodate all servicing requirements on all makes and models, just not in one job lot over the winter months. They're a coming. Bigger. And, arguably, better

Yet another Chinese motorcycle lands on our shorelines (probably Felixstowe). This is the 1000MT-X from CF Moto and, on first squint in bright sunshine, looks good.
After a good poke around, we can now say -- when it comes to styling, components and build quality -- it definitely is on par with KTM and some Japanese-made models in its class.
The bike was here for dyno testing for a bike magazine. We can't reveal its recorded rear wheel performance because the media outlet won't produce the article for a couple weeks. Anyways, we can say it delivers the goods. And if the media who attended its recent world launch are anything to go by, it proved to be a brilliant alternative to the usual trail-blasting adventure bike offerings. Especially for £8,699! Hmmm... [said while looking at APR rates].

Exotic and not so exotic metals - they can both cause heartache.

Always check the sump pan on any secondhand bike purchase. if there's a leak then there's a problem. Overtightening any sump plug will cause stripped threads or, worse still, a cracked pan. It's a bigger problem when your magnesium Ducati sump pan (1199 Panigale in this instance) requires minimal torque and specialised sealant to do the plug refit properly - cases of overtightening are all to common.
Add stone chips to the mix, where the magnesium covering coating gets punctured, and that deliciously lightweight magnesium will corrode in a very short time. And if that corrosion spot is near the sump plug area, just undoing the sump plug can be enough to shock the already weakened magnesium casting to cause a fracture, as we discovered with this unit. A replacement sump pan was the only fix.
Then there's the sump plug itself. Finding metal particles stuck to the magnet side is not uncommon on new motorcycles when being run in. Finding them on a "regularly serviced" 15,000 mile Bavarian-made track day tool is worth investigating further - before your motor becomes 'unfixable.'

It's not a paint job, mate!

To most in the UK, this bruiser of a sports tourer is better known as a Kawasaki ZZR1400. In the US, OZ and other markets it's tagged Ninja ZX14-R. And while the UK/EU lost the ZZR1400 in 2020 due to emissions regs, it is still available overseas.
In 2024, Kawasaki USA showcased a retro-tinged ZX14-R to celebrate 40 years of Kawasaki Ninja models. It wore a fancy paint job as standard, based on the classic colourway of the 1989 ZXR750. And this bike is one of those limited run models.
If you fancy a new 200mph+ comfy missile, then you too would have to import one from stateside, as did the owner of this maginficent specimen.
Straight out of a dealer showroom, brand new with only one mile on the LCD display, we've been tasked with running-in, completing the 600 mile service, and then fitting Akra mufflers topped off with a BSD remap. Nice.

Blimey! Extra toasty today at BSD HQ.

We thought you'd like to see this beauty - a Moto Guzzi Bobber based on a V85TT model. The conversion has been tastefully done, including the paintwork - that gold finish was originally applied to very early Honda models. In the sun it is... Stunning!
Meanwhile, winner of this month's Dirty Air Filter Trophy (DAFT) goes to a Triumph 675 Street Triple.
Needless to say, have a good time if out and about on a bike this weekend. Please do drink water (plenty) at every opportunity.
