πŸ†πŸπŸš™ Massive congratulations to Adam, who passed his driving test in Peterborough on his FIRST attempt and with ZERO driving faults! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ˜πŸš˜πŸπŸ†βœ…

What an absolutely outstanding result! Adam delivered a flawless drive from start to finish, achieving a full clean sheet with no driving faults whatsoever, a truly exceptional performance. πŸ‘πŸ˜

It’s been a real pleasure teaching Adam. He has developed into a very safe, confident and highly competent driver, consistently showing great awareness, control, planning and maturity behind the wheel.

Throughout his training, we covered a wide range of driving environments including Cambridge, the M11, A1(M), country roads and busy town driving, which helped build the experience and confidence needed to handle anything the test route could throw at him. 🚘

The examiner’s feedback at the end of the test was incredible. He said it’s not often he sees a drive like it, real praise from someone who’s seen it all. πŸ‘πŸ†

To complete the test with absolutely no driving faults at all on a first attempt is a fantastic achievement and a true reflection of Adam’s hard work, consistency and natural ability.

Enjoy the freedom of your full UK πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ driving licence, Adam! πŸͺͺπŸš™

πŸ‡«πŸ‡· Joyeux Bastille Day! Did you know your driving lessons are more French than you think? πŸ‡«πŸ‡·πŸš—

Today, 14th July, France celebrates Bastille Day - and here in Peterborough, we have a very special connection to France! Our city has been twinned with Bourges, France πŸ‡«πŸ‡· since 1957, and we even have a Bourges Boulevard running right through the city centre!

And if you look closely at the photo… even my teaching car is French - a Renault Clio! πŸš—πŸ‡«πŸ‡· Two French connections in one shot! πŸŽ‰

But the French connection doesn’t stop there… so many of the words we use every day when driving actually come straight from France! πŸ‡«πŸ‡·

🚘 Garage - straight from French, garage (to shelter or store). Where your car lives!

πŸš™ Bonnet - from French bonnet, a type of hat. Pop it open and you’ll see why!

πŸ‘¨β€βœˆοΈ Chauffeur - from chauffer, meaning to heat or drive. Originally the person who stoked the engine!

🏎️ Coupé - a French word for a car with a fixed roof and sloping rear. Still used today for sporty two-door cars.

⛽️ Carburettor - from the French carburateur. The part that mixes air and fuel.

πŸ›£οΈ Camber - from the French cambrΓ©, meaning curved. That slight curve on the road surface that helps drainage.

⚠️ Chevron - the V-shaped road markings warning of sharp bends. Pure French!

🚌 Depot - from French dépôt, where vehicles are stored or maintained.

🏞️ Terrain - as in all-terrain vehicle. Straight from the French for land or ground.

πŸ—ΊοΈ En route - still used in fully French form! β€œWe’re en route to the test centre!” πŸŽ‰

🏘️ Cul-de-sac - literally French for β€œbottom of the bag.” A dead end road - and a three-point turn opportunity!

🌳 Boulevard - a wide tree-lined road. And yes, we have one right here named after our French twin town!

πŸš—πŸš™πŸš— Queue - we British love a good queue, and the word is entirely French!

🚧 Detour - straight from the French for a change of direction. We’ve all been on one!

🚦Route - from the French route, meaning road or way. We use it every day when planning a journey!

So next time you're driving along Bourges Boulevard, or stopped at the louvre traffic lights near the train station (those are the ones with the angled slats that control exactly which drivers can see the signal, and yes, louvre is French too! πŸ‡«πŸ‡·), you're surrounded by French connections without even realising it. Peterborough has more links to France than you might think, and many of them are hiding in plain sight! πŸ‡«πŸ‡·πŸš—πŸš¦

How many of these French driving words did you already know? And can you think of any others? Drop them in the comments! πŸ‘‡πŸ‡«πŸ‡·

πŸš— The DVSA has refreshed its Ready to Pass website, and it’s well worth bookmarking as a resource to help you keep track of your progress as you learn to drive.

The update covers the 27 essential driving skills every learner needs, but what I particularly like is the addition of reflective questions on each skill page, along with prompts to β€œAsk your instructor” about anything you’re unsure of.

Encouraging learners to ask questions is a great addition. Some of the most valuable lessons come from discussing situations that pupils might not otherwise think to raise.

As an LDC instructor, every pupil receives the 192-page LDC Driving Skills Workbook. It complements the DVSA’s approach by helping learners track their progress, reflect on each lesson and understand which skills to focus on next. It’s a structured way of learning that keeps you fully involved in your progress and helps you build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to become a safe driver for life.

As a driving instructor, my approach has always been the same: focus on becoming a genuinely safe, confident and independent driver, and passing your test will naturally follow. It’s great to see the updated website reinforcing that message by shifting the emphasis from simply passing a test to developing the skills needed for a lifetime of safe driving.

Whether you’re learning to drive or supporting someone who is, it’s well worth spending a few minutes exploring the updated website.

πŸš— A fantastic drive today - well done, Adam! πŸ‘

Today, Adam completed an excellent drive from Peterborough to Cambridge and back, gaining valuable experience in a wide range of real-world driving situations.

The lesson included driving on the A1{M) motorway πŸ›£οΈ, navigating busy roads through Cambridge, parking at a retail park, following road signs and independent navigation, as well as driving through several villages with frequent changes between 20mph, 30mph and 40mph speed limits.

What really impressed me was Adam’s observation. Even where some road markings in Cambridge were quite faded, he spotted them well and made safe, confident decisions. He also did an excellent job spotting changing speed limits, adjusting his speed smoothly and selecting the correct gear throughout the drive.

We had to change our planned route back to Peterborough and return via the A1(M), but Adam adapted brilliantly and stayed calm and focused throughout.

A really impressive drive today, Adam. Keep up the great work, as your driving test date gets ever closer. πŸ‘πŸš—

πŸš— Thinking about learning to drive and looking for a patient, professional driving instructor in Peterborough? I’d love to help you become a safe, confident and independent driver.

With temperatures rising, my Renault Clio training car’s air conditioning has been freshly serviced and topped up - keeping lessons cool, comfortable, and focused on learning.

Hot weather can affect concentration and fatigue, so staying cool helps you stay safe.

Other hot-weather driving tips:

πŸ›ž Check tyre pressures regularly
πŸ’§ Stay hydrated to keep focus sharp
πŸ•ΆοΈ Keep sunglasses handy for low sunπŸš— Leave extra space and stay patient

πŸš— Thinking of learning to drive? Don’t assume manual lessons are becoming a thing of the past.

The government is considering reducing its electric vehicle sales targets, with the current requirement for 80% of new cars sold by 2030 to be electric now under review.

But here’s the key point for learners πŸ‘‡

πŸ“Š In 2025, around 7.8 million used cars were sold in the UK, compared with just 2 million new cars. The vast majority of those used vehicles are petrol or diesel, and many are manual.

That means manual cars are likely to remain a familiar sight on UK roads for years to come.

A manual licence also gives you the flexibility to drive both manual and automatic vehicles, which is why many learners still choose this route.

I offer manual driving lessons in Peterborough in a modern Renault Clio. Message me to check availability and take the first step towards your driving licence.
