Congratulations go to Nathan Kelly from Stanley who passed his practical driving test this morning at Perth DTC with a perfect drive.

You were very nervous on the run up to your test but successfully held it together to achieve this result.

We had good days and bad, with some great laughs on the way. You've worked hard for this result and I'm very happy for you. I will miss our chats on lessons. All the best for the future, give me a wave when you see me out and about.

Everyone is trying to beat the system, booking a test now via a third party site will now get you blocked from booking a test through the DVSA website.

You are also running the risk of any test booked like this being cancelled and you losing your money.

To get round this you will have to phone DVSA directly to remove the block and book a test.

Learner Drivers Beware!

DVLA has a 600,000 backlog of driving tests and changed the rules to stop mass bookings, you now have to book your test yourself. This has led to a raise in fake websites offering this service

This is a picture of a car specifically used for training the next generation of drivers; you might have come across one recently in your daily commute, trip to the shops, day out with the family. It is clearly identifiable by the clearly-visible big L in bright red.
Some school cars aren’t fully marked up, they may have a roof box but almost certainly they will be displaying “L” plates.

Driving instructors in the UK go through a very thorough training and qualification process and have to undergo regular assessments to enable them to teach people the valuable skill of learning to drive and here in the UK.

Thanks in part to the skills and professionalism of most Approved Driving Instructors, we have one of the best rates of road safety in the world.

If you've ever been 'stuck' behind a learner driver then you will have passed your test driving a car , so congratulations on passing your test when you did and surely (hopefully) you must remember what it was like learning to drive.

Remember, this might be the very first time on a main road for this learner after they've spent a number of hours on very quiet side streets.
It might be that they are practising a scenario that has in the past been difficult for them. They might be on a mock test getting ready for their practical test. They might even be on their test right now, you just don't know.

What you can be certain of though is that their instructor is helping them to achieve the standards required of all drivers in UK law. If you don't like 20mph speed limits, if you think red traffic lights are only advisory, if you think they should have given way to you despite the give way line applying to your vehicle then I'm sorry, but there is nothing that the instructor will do about it. Blasting your horn, acting aggressively, gesticulating, driving erratically around the learner isn't helping them learn anything, other than making yourself look stupid and an example of how NOT to do things, and it CERTAINLY won't make the instructor or examiner say to their pupil go faster as this driver is tailgating us.

Please consider not using unauthorised signals (headlight flashing or waving at them ) to encourage learners to pull out of junctions or letting them cross in front of you, whilst you may think you are being helpful but this in all probabilities will overload their thought process and may cause problems such as panic as it’s something they may incorrectly deal with, its always best sometimes just to carry on with your journey leaving the learner to decide themselves when its safe to go.

Please keep a safe distance (2 seconds in good conditions if you're interested in the dry , 4 seconds in the wet ) and you'll find that the learner will soon turn off this road or pull up. You'll be interested to note that whilst you're "stuck" behind a learner your fuel economy will be better and you'll flow through traffic a lot smoother than driving a full throttle everywhere.

So to summarise please give learners a little respect, please keep your distance, if they make a mistake in front of you take a deep breath and relax, they are all trying really hard and they'll be out of your way at the next junction.

REMEMBER if you do act aggressively towards my pupil and I at any time you WILL be reported to the police and I WILL have great pleasure in using my dashcam footage to assist them with any prosecution.

If you are courteous to learner drivers and appreciate the skill and professionalism of our ADIs then on behalf of all of us I thank you. You really will make our lives in the passenger seat a lot easier.

Food for thought.

A good reminder to parents of any pupils starting to learn to drive ..........

Driving in the 80s

When I was taught to drive it took me roughly 10 hours to pass the test. I had however been driving on a farm since I was 12.

Reverse parking was not taught.

There was no Theory Test.

There was no hazard perception test.

There was no independent drive section.

There were no show me/tell me questions.

There were no/very few bus lanes.

There were no red routes.

There were no/very few cycle lanes.

There were no advanced stop lines.

Cyclists were taught cycling proficiency at school.

Pedestrians were taught the Green X Code.

There were more police enforcing driving standards.

There were less vehicles on the road.

There were hardly any parked cars.

I never heard the term "road rage"

There were no speed humps, 20 zones, "chicanes" or other traffic "calming" measures.

As far as I remember other drivers gave me space and time while I was learning.
There were less/no mini roundabouts/double mini roundabouts.

Roads were better maintained with signs and line markings you could actually see, and pot holes had not been invented.

Supermarkets were not open 24/7 and closed on Sundays so you could always use their car parks for some initial practice.

The test only lasted about 20 minutes.

Your children have so much more to deal with than you ever did so please show them respect, don't pressurise them due to the cost, ask yourself, are you putting a value on their life?

All I ask is to just give them the support they deserve for just attempting to learn to drive on todays roads yet alone facing the dreaded L test.

The question is, would you pass your driving test if I asked you to sit a mock test tomorrow?

Congratulations today go to Brodie Provan - Sinclair from Abernethy who passed his practical driving test this morning at Perth DTC with a great steady drive.

I know you were nervous this morning , but you managed to hold it together until the end of the test to get the result you wanted .

By your own admission you have struggled to get through this but slowly and steadily you (and I) have pushed yourself to deal with the whole learning process and to get the result today.

I’m sure you will have many safe miles and I hope your license will open doors for you in the future.

It's been an absolute pleasure being part of your driving journey, I will definitely miss your chat in the car.

A lot of people pass their test but getting you through this has been a rewarding experience for us both, we both worked hard to do this also a big shout out to your mum for supporting me in the whole process.

About time this has happened, unfortunately its not yet made any difference whatsoever, tests still being sold online, no more tests available, despite being notified of these 3rd party sites DVSA are doing nothing.

Well done, I know you were nervous, but you managed with a near perfect drive.

You were so worried about getting a bay park and of course that's exactly what you got and managed it perfectly. All that practice was worth it.

I see folk daily on their phones, some days double figures, drivers looking down at their phones not paying attention when the traffic lights change, they must think they are invisible and don’t think anyone will notice, it the reel or message that important?
