The new mandatory Driving Instructor Code of Practice announced this week will set the cat amongst the pigeons for many instructors - it clearly sets out the expected standards that for many, have been missing for some time.
Its aim is to protect consumers from unscrupulous instructors who operate below the expected standards for teaching, conducting business and professionalism - it even reaches into the conduct expected of instructors outside of their working role.
Over the past few years, I’ve seen the standard of professionalism slip to a point where I no longer recognise the industry I joined over 35 years ago.
This week I have seen around ten driving school cars (or ones that could reasonably be understood to be driving schools) which aren’t displaying an ADI Certificate nor a Trainee Licence.
I’ve seen adverts for driving instructors claiming high pass rates, without any supporting evidence.
I’ve also seen adverts with headline prices which don’t match their website prices.
I regularly see driving school cars not even displaying regulation L plates.
Let’s hope this new Driving Instructor Code of Practice does what it is designed for and raises standards.
All we need now is robust enforcement.
