🚗 ⤴️ The Bend That Will Bite If You Guess the Speed
One thing I see far too often on country roads is drivers charging into bends at a speed they simply cannot control. They’re hoping the bend will open up, hoping nothing is coming, hoping the road stays kind.
Hope isn’t a driving skill and on rural roads, hope is how people get hurt.
Country bends are actually straightforward when you understand the rule that keeps you alive: your speed must match what you can see, nothing else.
•Not the speed limit.
•Not your confidence.
•Not what happened last time you drove that road.
•Only what’s visible right now.
This is where the limit point comes in, the furthest point on the road you can see before the bend disappears.
• If that point rushes toward you, you are too fast.
• If it stays still, you have chosen the right speed.
• If it moves away, you are in full control.
Most drivers don’t look for it. They stare at the verge, the centre line, or the straight bit before the bend. None of that helps when the bend tightens and the car is travelling at thirty metres per second.
Sadly, rural collisions often follow the same script:
•Entered too fast.
•Limit point racing toward them.
•Warning missed.
•Braking too late.
•Grip gone.
The outcome decided by whatever was waiting, a tree, a ditch, a tractor, a cyclist, a horse rider, a broken‑down car, or a child walking home.
Country roads don’t care how experienced you think you are.
They only care about the speed you choose when you cannot see what’s around the corner.
So here’s the life‑saving rule:
🚗 Slow before the bend.
🚗 Pick a speed that lets you stop in half the distance you can see to be clear.
🚗 Hold your position.
🚗 Watch the limit point and adjust until it stays still.
Rural roads are stunning, until you treat them like a racetrack.
The next bend is either safe or dangerous depending entirely on the number you choose on your speedometer.
