🚗 Should you sound your horn before a blind humpback bridge?

The Highway Code doesn’t say you must.

However, Rule 112 does allow you to use your horn while your vehicle is moving if you need to warn other road users of your presence.

On a narrow humpback bridge with no footpaths and very limited visibility, a quick tap of the horn may be good practice to let others know you’re there.

Just remember… the horn doesn’t give you priority.

You should still approach slowly, be prepared to stop, and only continue if it’s safe. Think of the horn as a warning, not a right of way.

Would you use your horn in this situation? Let me know in the comments.

⚠️ A quick warning for anyone trying to get an earlier driving test…

This screenshot is from a real email received by one of our learners after they attempted to use an advertised driving test “service” to find an earlier test date.

The result?

Their ability to book, change, cancel or rebook driving tests online has been suspended by the DVSA for 12 months.

The DVSA has made it clear that it is taking much stronger action against unusual activity on the driving test booking system. While many companies advertise cancellation-finding services, it is important to understand that using third parties may carry risks.

Our advice remains simple:

✅ Book your driving test through the official GOV.UK website.
✅ Manage any changes yourself using the official GOV.UK service.
✅ If you need help with an existing booking, contact DVSA Customer Services directly.

Getting an earlier test is never worth risking losing control of your booking altogether.

If you’re one of our learners and you’re unsure about anything to do with your test booking, just ask before making changes. We’re always happy to point you in the right direction.

What does this sign really mean?

This isn’t just warning you about a bend.

The warning sign tells you the road ahead bends to the left, but the additional plate saying “Adverse camber” is the part many drivers overlook.

An adverse camber means the road surface slopes away from the bend instead of into it. That means your tyres have less natural grip to help keep the car on the road. In wet, icy or loose conditions, the risk of losing traction is even greater.

So what should you do?

• Reduce your speed before entering the bend.
• Choose an appropriate gear before the corner.
• Avoid harsh braking or sudden steering whilst cornering.
• Look well ahead and position the car sensibly to maximise your view whilst staying on your side of the road.
• Accelerate smoothly only once you can see the exit of the bend and it’s safe to do so.

Remember, warning signs are there because something about the road deserves your attention. Understanding why they’re there can make you a much safer driver.

Does anyone know where this sign is???

Before you scroll any further…

If you’ve ever driven around looking for a bigger parking space because you weren’t confident about parallel parking… you’re certainly not alone.

I watched someone today who appeared to be struggling to parallel park on the school run. I don’t know why, of course. It could have been a lack of practice, nerves, an unfamiliar car, or something completely different.

What it did remind me of is that many qualified drivers quietly avoid certain situations because they haven’t done them for a while.

The result is often unnecessary stress, frustration and a feeling that you’re not making the best use of your car.

The good news? It doesn’t have to stay that way.

Whether it’s parallel parking, bay parking, roundabouts, dual carriageways, motorways, country roads, or simply rebuilding confidence after time away from driving, I can help.

In just a couple of hours, you’ll probably surprise yourself with how quickly those skills and confidence return. There is no judgement, no pressure, and no embarrassment. Just calm, friendly coaching at your own pace.

You passed your driving test for a reason. Sometimes you just need someone to help you unlock those skills again.

The Question I Wish More Learners Asked…

It’s a question I hear almost every day.

“Do you think I’ll pass?”

Of course, passing the driving test is important. It’s a huge milestone and something every learner works towards.

But there is another question that matters even more.

“Would you trust me to drive your family?”

If the answer to that is yes, then you’re not just learning how to pass a test. You’re learning how to make safe decisions, anticipate hazards, stay calm under pressure and protect the people around you.

That’s the standard we aim for on every lesson.

Driving isn’t about impressing an examiner for 40 minutes.

It’s about becoming the sort of driver that friends and family would happily get into a car with, knowing they’ll arrive safely.

Passes are celebrated.

Safe drivers are remembered.

Is Your Car Actually Roadworthy? 🚗

Every learner driver has to learn the ‘Show Me, Tell Me’ safety checks before taking the practical driving test.

But passing your test doesn’t mean those checks stop being important.

Take a couple of minutes to check:

✅ Tyres are legal, correctly inflated and free from damage.
✅ All lights are clean and working.
✅ Windscreen washers are topped up and the wipers clear the screen properly.
✅ Oil and coolant are at the correct levels.
✅ Your horn works.
✅ Number plates are clean, secure and easy to read.
✅ Warning lights aren’t indicating a fault.
✅ Your MOT is valid (if your vehicle is over three years old).

A valid MOT certificate is a legal requirement for most vehicles over three years old, unless a specific exemption applies.

However, it’s worth remembering that an MOT only confirms that the vehicle met the required standard on the day it was tested. It does not guarantee that the vehicle remains roadworthy for the following 12 months.

The responsibility for ensuring a vehicle is safe and legal to drive rests with the driver. If your vehicle is unsafe, or you are driving without a required MOT, you could face prosecution. It may also affect the outcome of any insurance claim, depending on the circumstances and the terms of your policy.

Those simple checks take just a few minutes and could prevent a breakdown, avoid a collision, or even save a life.

🚗❤️ Learn to Drive. Learn CPR.

Passing your driving test is a huge milestone.

But what if, one day, you were first on the scene at a road traffic collision?

At DTMK Driving School, we believe great drivers should also have the confidence to help if the worst happens.

That’s why everyone who passes their driving test with DTMK Driving School is invited to attend one of our Learn to Drive, Learn CPR sessions, where you’ll gain the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Basic Life Support and AED for Adults, Children, and Infants (RQF).

We hope you’ll never need those skills.

But if you ever do, they could make all the difference.

If you’re interested in more comprehensive first aid training for work, your family, or simply to build your confidence, take a look at our DTMK Training Services pages, where you’ll find a range of professionally delivered first aid courses.
