Here's a fantasic Defender thats come to Alive so we can dial in the BMW M57 engine and ZF8HP Automatic transmission.

Based on what was a 2.4 Defender 90, this car has been converted to BMW M57 power by our customer, using many parts supplied by our friend, Laurence Gray, aka Laurence and the Machine.

The M57 Iron block engine has been adorned with uprated 219 injectors from the 535d model, an R50 fuel pump and a hybrid turbo, so should be capable of handling some big boost and impressive power. Using a later generation DDE6 engine management, this engine had previously been tuned to produce up to a claimed 350hp, although our dyno wasn't so sure.

We finished the day off having pushed the engine as far as we could, working around the limitations of a 3bar MAP sensor and tentatively pushing an unknown spec of hybrid turbo. All said and done, the difference to power delivery and drivability was significantly improved and our customer left with a much more compliant and usable Defender. Although our customer wasn't chasing big numbers, we perhaps might see this 90 again in the near future, for an uprated 4 MAP sensor and a Darkside hybrid turbo, which we love dialling in!

Here's a really nice Td5 130, thats come over to Alive from the Netherlands, for our awesome GTB450 tuning and turbo conversion.

This overland spec Defender had previously been remapped and had a hybrid turbo fitted, but the performance wasn't good enough to haul nearly three tons of Land Rover, and the smoke from the exhaust has horrendous! Just to make matters worse, its also had the final drive ratio changed in the transfer box, from 1.4:1 to 1.2:1, making the lag from the hybrid turbo even worse!

Join Martyn and Rob, as they initially take this out for a test drive, as presented to us, and then later on, after dyno tuning, to compare how the engine responds with the GTB450 installed.

It has to be said that the GTB450 thrives with extra load, whether that be a heavy vehicle, towing a heavy trailer, or even both, our incredible VNT turbo just laps it up in such a way that performance feels almost unaffected, compared to driving without the additional load! The fact this also has Discovery final drive ratios, is of no concern to the GTB450, as it just laps it up anyway.

We have proven time and time again, how the Alive GTB450 VNT turbo for the Td5, vastly out performs any other turbo available in terms of overall drivability and refinement. Dont just take our word for it though. Come and have a drive of our GTB450 equipped Defender Td5 110 to try before you buy.

Here's a Td5 110 you've seen before on the channel. It's come back to Alive from its home, far, far away, for us to install a low mileage, refreshed 15P engine and one of our awesome GTB450 VNT turbos.

You may remember, just like the Black Td5 90 we featured last week, this had another tuners VNT turbo installed, which failed to deliver the punch thats required by the ZF8HP automatic transmission, especially when its in its higher gears.

Not so now however, as our GTB450, matched with our precision tuning, gives masses more torque and vastly superior response, making the Td5 respond rapidly to the auto gearbox, now having more than enough punch to comfortably cruise in eighth gear, at less than 1300rpm!
