NC Inspiration ✨

1: Danny Irvine
One of the most incredible NCs we’ve ever seen. Built to WTAC Open Class specs, this 20B rotary-swapped, carbon-clad monster was nine years in the making. It has a Motec ECU, a 6-speed Holinger sequential ‘box, Brembo 6-pot front brakes and a bespoke AMB aero package. Simply mindblowing.

2: Maciej Cz
With a full Mazdaspeed bodykit, a hardtop and a set of Advan SA3Rs, this has to be one of the best looking OEM+ NCs we’ve seen for a while.

3: Mory Yim
Mory’s car is loaded with rare, desirable and one-off parts, like Garage Vary aero add-ons, custom endplates and side splitters, a Varis GT wing and a load of custom interior parts. A spectacular form-meets-function build.

4: Sam Vickers
Fitted with a Rotrex supercharger kit, a freshly rebuilt engine, Work wheels and a distinctive two-tone livery, this is one of the most memorable NCs in the UK.

5: Ryan Laker
Fitted with MeisterR coilovers, Recaro SPG seats and a selection of other track-friendly upgrades, this ‘07 NC1 has proven to be an incredibly reliable machine.

6: Michael Operana
This 2011 PRHT car has MeisterR coilovers, an AEM intake, an ISR exhaust and 17x8+35 wheels wrapped in 235/40 tyres. “After test driving and owning many different platforms, the NC2 Miata seems to check everything off my list of what I wanted in a driver's car,” says Michael.

Build Breakdown | Max’s lifted NA

Most people lower their MX-5s, and that’s exactly what Max did after a friend recommended a set of coilovers and some new wheels. He entered some autocross events with it and enjoyed it in the traditional way an MX-5 is typically enjoyed.

But everything changed when he watched a video from on his NA lift kit. He was hooked on the idea: when he returned to the US with his 1.6-litre Eunos Roadster in tow, it was getting lifted.

After driving it around low for a little while, he bent a wheel on a pothole - and that was the final straw. Out went the coilovers and low-profile tyres, in came the lift kit and a set of massive General Grabber all-terrain tyres.

The end result is absolutely spectacular - especially with that Jeep push bar welded to the front end. It doesn’t just look the part, though: Max takes it offroad at every opportunity he gets, ploughing through mud, crossing rivers and tackling undulating trails. It still gets driven almost daily too, so it’s not just a weekend car.

It might not be as agile on tarmac as it once was, but Max’s lifted Roadster looks insanely fun to drive. From a sheer smiles-per-mile perspective, we’re willing to bet that few other cars come close - and isn’t that what driving is all about?

Build Breakdown | Casper’s NC1

Being one of just 375 2.0-litre Icon special editions built for the UK market in 2007, Casper’s car was a rare find indeed. He bought it totally standard in February last year, and has since set about making it look and drive better while maintaining its day-to-day usability.

He started with the perfect blank canvas: Copper Red Mica has to be one of the best looking standard colours offered on the NC1, surely? A Mazdaspeed front bumper now adorns the front end, which gives the car a much more striking look. A noticeable improvement over the stock NC1 front bumper, we reckon. It’s fitted with a front lip too for an added dose of aggression.

Move to the side of the car and you’ll immediately notice those WedsSport wheels, which fill the arches beautifully. Their bronze finish works so well with the car’s dark metallic red paintwork too. Lurking behind the wheels are uprated discs and pads, plus a set of MeisterR Sportive coilovers - excellent all-rounders that work well on the road, which is where this car spends most of its time.

All in all, this car serves as the perfect reminder that an NC1 doesn’t need to be highly modified to look sensational. A few choice upgrades can make all the difference.

Sitting on a set of 17x8 +38 Regamasters, 215/45 Yoko A052s and Ohlins coilovers, this ND looks stylish, purposeful and functional - the perfect backroad weapon.

This 200hp BBR-converted ND1 really stands out - the green, orange and white vinyl used on the livery reminds us of the iconic Le Mans-winning 787B.

Build Breakdown | Ben’s ‘90s-style turbo Eunos

Despite being bought out of boredom during Covid, Ben’s VVT-swapped, turbocharged Eunos Roadster has become a bigger part of his life than he ever could have imagined. With it, he’s attended countless car shows, track days and hillclimb events, learnt new skills (like vinyl wrapping), made new friends and… well, got married. What a choice of wedding car.

The first thing you’ll notice about this NA is the colour, which we think suits it extremely well - and fits the whole ‘90s Japanese touge aesthetic. “A pink MX-5 gets a lot of attention,” says Ben. “It’s so fun seeing everyone smile when they see it at shows and out and about on the road.”

Speaking of that ‘90s aesthetic, the SSR Mk3s, subtle decals and period-correct custom pieces really amplify the look. “I purchased a 3D printer just over a year ago and started to look into what I could print for my car,” Ben told us. “It's so cool making something yourself that you know no other MX-5 will have.”

This car has the performance to back up its looks too, courtesy of a TD04 turbo kit with a Kraken manifold and a Motorsport Electronics ECU. Meanwhile, taking care of both the lows and the handling are a set of BC Racing Extreme Low coilovers - a proven option for those looking to build a slammed, stylish MX-5 that still corners well.

Build Breakdown | Kai’s 300hp turbo NB

After riding in his friend’s forged, turbocharged MX-5 for the first time, Kai was immediately hooked. He loved not only the performance it had to offer, but its ‘sleeper’ nature - MX-5s aren’t known for their raw power, after all.

So he set about building something similar for himself. Working alongside his mechanic dad Chris and friend Paul Sturgeon, Kai totally rebuilt his 2002 S-VT MX-5 into a 300 bhp, OEM+ sleeper. With forged internals and a Garrett turbo pushing 20 psi of boost, it certainly has plenty of go - while a fresh paint job from .works_kent and a complete AP1 ‘Tupperware’ kit give it the ‘show’ to match.

All that power is transferred to the ground through a 6-speed ‘box, Kaaz 1.5-way diff and Rota Grid V wheels wrapped in Nankang tyres - a tried and tested combo. The engine bay is immaculate too, with fresh paint throughout and an array of fancy parts. Overall, it’s a well-rounded, usable package that looks the part and performs well. What more could you ask for?
