Build Breakdown | Emmanuelle’s showstopping NA

“My MX-5 story began back in 2003, when my mum owned a red Mk1,” says Emmanuelle. “She always said one of her regrets was selling that car. I searched for it for years, hoping I could bring it back home, but that hope eventually dimmed. After a while, I finally decided I would go out and find my own MX-5 - a ‘small project’.”

Yeah. That ‘small project’ didn’t stay small for long, did it? As you can tell, Emmanuelle has well and truly gone to town on this car, transforming it from a virtually stock example into the turbocharged, widebodied, liveried show car you see here. It has to be one of the most distinctive and spectacular Mk1s in the UK.

The Tomica livery harks back to the Skyline Super Silhouette Group 5 racer from the mid ’80s - and the NOPRO wing and aggressive widebody amplify that race-ready look. This car has the bite to match its bark too, courtesy of a 250WHP turbocharged 1.8 engine with antilag and launch control.

So far, Emmanuelle has mainly been using the car to scoop up silverware at shows across the UK, but plans to get it out on track this year to find out what it’s really capable of. We, for one, can’t wait to see this thing driven in anger.

M'z Labo Toyota Coil-on-Plug (COP) conversion kits are now available for the NA and NB 1.6, plus 1.8-litre non-VVT NA and NB engines! Included in each kit are the coils themselves, a plug and play wiring harness and a mounting plate, making it easy to achieve a neat and tidy look.

Why switch to Toyota coils? Compared to the stock Mazda setup, they provide a stronger, more consistent spark, eliminating the risk of spark blowout on turbocharged, supercharged and high-end N/A builds.

Build Breakdown | Max’s clean, green turbo NA

We love a well-rounded build - a car that blends function and form together. That’s exactly what Max’s NA is. Yes it’s low, has great fitment and an immaculate paintjob. But it also has an impressive spec list to match.

Let’s start with the engine. Having started life as a ‘93 S-Special, it has a B6 under the bonnet - but now with a forged bottom end and a TD04 turbo kit, resulting in an impressive 298 bhp. It’s mated to a 6-speed NB ‘box with a Competition Clutch, lightened flywheel and an NB Torsen diff.

Handling and braking haven’t been overlooked either; Max has fitted MeisterR coilovers, Wilwood brakes up front and NB Sport brakes at the rear, along with some fresh poly bushes from Superpro.

As you’d expect, the interior has been given a similar function-meets-form treatment. Inside you’ll find a GCR3 half cage, bucket seats and harnesses, along with a Nardi steering wheel. What’s not to love?

“I try to get to as many shows as I can throughout the year, but one day I’d love to buy a new wheel setup and take the car out on track to see what it can do,” Max admits. As much as we love the current setup, we reckon this thing would fly on track!

Spec Highlights:
Full respray in Nissan Seafoam Green two-tone
1.6 engine with built bottom end built by Connaught
Stock refreshed head
TD04 turbo kit
NB 6-speed gearbox
Competition Clutch and lightened flywheel
NB 3.6 Type-2 Torsen differential
Work CR01 wheels
MeisterR ClubRace coilovers
Superpro bushes
Wilwood big brake kit
NB 1.8 Sport rear brakes
Jass Performance Low Profile headlights
Colour-matched turn signal intakes (TSIs)
GV-style lip
Rear bumper lip
Carbon Miata sideskirts
Ducktail spoiler and hardtop spoiler smoothed in
Motamec MFX bucket seats with TRS harnesses
GC Fabrications GCR3 half cage
Nardi steering wheel and custom gear k**b

Build Breakdown | Aston’s track-spec NC1 daily

Affectionately known as the Asahi Mobile, Aston’s NC1 certainly stands out on track. It probably stands out even more on the daily commute, though: “I use the car on the road almost daily as my commuter to work and back,” he said, “as well as taking it on track whenever I can.”

Not many cars can do that, all without costing a bomb to run or experiencing any mechanical failures whatsoever. As Aston says, “the car has been absolutely bulletproof in my ownership, only needing servicing items.” Pretty impressive.

That’s a testament to Mazda’s engineering genius - but it’s also a reminder that the best builds are often the simplest. Aside from a Racing Beat manifold, a lightened flywheel and a short shifter, the engine and drivetrain in this thing are completely stock. So it’s every bit as reliable as a factory-spec example, just more exciting to drive.

Aston hasn’t gone overboard elsewhere either, only installing the parts you need to have fun on track (and stay safe while you’re at it). Coilovers, bucket seat and harnesses, a quality half cage… it’s all you really need to take to the track with confidence.

So, if you’re on the fence about modding your daily-driven NC (for fear of ruining its day-to-day usability and reliability), this is the recipe for you:

Spec Highlights:
NC1 2.0-litre 6-speed
NC3 front bumper
BC Racing coilovers
Corbeau bucket seat with harness
GC Fabrications half cage
Nardi steering wheel
RX-8 anti-roll bars
Sparco Terra wheels
BOFI Racing MDA-style front lip
Racing Beat exhaust manifold
Lightweight flywheel

Build Breakdown | Paul’s 1.6 turbo track car

“We’ve been doing track days since the ‘90s and have had a huge array of cars in those years,” Paul told us. “But I’ve always come back to MX-5s because they’re just sublime to drive and give amazing feedback to the driver.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

And this turbocharged NA looks like an absolute riot. Under the bonnet, a tried and tested TD04 turbo is paired to a tough, free-flowing Kraken manifold and downpipe. Open up the engine and you’ll find forged rods and ACL bearings, while a coolant reroute, uprated radiator and oil cooler help keep the B6 cool on track, even in the height of summer.

An NB2 Sport 6-speed and L*D help put that extra power to the ground, while BC Racing coilovers, PBS and Roddisons pads and wider, stickier tyres give this Mk1 plenty of grip, agility and stopping power.

“It’s a pleasure to drive, and we have in sun, rain, sleet and snow. We use it mainly as a business card and attend as many Frank’s Charity Track Day Club events as we can, as well as helping Mission Motorsport with passenger lap days at Three Sisters and Thruxton. And when we get a chance, we enter sprint events like Quick60, held by Retro Rides at Mallory Park.

“Anyone who’s been in the passenger seat has always left with a smile on their face, and that's exactly what she was built for!”
