DervTech are a performance tuning specialists based just outside of Manchester, in the North of England. We have gained a reputation for providing top class hardware and software tuning solutions for many makes and models of diesel or petrol vehicles. We write all our remaps ourselves, in the proper way (just like the original manufacturer would have!!) and don’t use cheap copies bought from eBay

as many "tuners" do. Whether you are wanting a stage 1 tune for a totally standard car, stage 2 for a car with bolt on modifications or a stage 3 for those really bespoke cars – we can do them all! Couple this with the ability to turn off EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation valves) and DPF (diesel particulate filters) and enable those features such as hard cut (popcorn) rev limiters and launch control… we really are your one stop tuning shop! After years of playing with ECU’s and working on different cars, we were tuning our own, tuning our friends and then ultimately tuning friends of our friends. This is when DervTech was born!

⚙ DCT Tuning ⚙

This LCI Cooper S came in for a GPF delete pipe along with our custom ECU and DCT gearbox calibration.

Unlike the Aisin automatic gearbox, the 7-speed DCT has lower torque limits that need to be respected. While it has very fast shift speeds it cannot reliably handle the same torque figures as the Aisin.

Alongside the ECU tune we also carried out our custom DCT software. This recalibrates the gearbox to improve shift strategy, clutch operation and gear changes, allowing it to work correctly with the increased engine performance while remaining within the gearbox's operating limits.

Resulting in increased performance and a much more responsive driving experience without exceeding what the transmission is designed to handle.

🤔 Which Gearbox Does Your Mini Have? 🤔

Not sure which automatic gearbox is fitted to your F Series Mini? We get asked this almost daily, especially by customers looking into ECU or TCU tuning.

6-Speed Aisin Automatic (Image 1)
- Found in earlier F56 Cooper S & JCW models
- Features the traditional mechanical gear selector with a leather gaiter
- Common on pre-LCI vehicles (before the 2018 facelift)

7-Speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) (Image 2)
- Found in LCI Cooper S models
- Features the modern electronic "floating" gear selector
- Delivers much faster, smoother gear changes than the older 6-speed automatic

8-Speed Aisin Automatic (Image 3)
- Found in LCI JCW models
- Uses the same style electronic gear selector as the DCT, so they're often confused
- Despite looking identical, this is a conventional torque converter automatic with 8 forward gears

The 7-speed DCT and 8-speed Aisin use exactly the same gear selector, so you cannot tell them apart by the shifter alone. The easiest rule is:
- LCI Cooper S = 7-Speed DCT
- LCI JCW = 8-Speed Aisin

Knowing which gearbox you have is important when choosing performance upgrades, servicing requirements and gearbox tuning, as each transmission has different capabilities and calibration options.

🙌 WE ARE BACK! 🙌

After what feels like a lifetime, my MacBook is finally FIXED!

That means we're back to normal operations. We'll be catching up on all outstanding enquiries, and regular social media posting is back. We've got A LOT to catch you up on, so keep an eye on our page over the coming days.

We first met this customer last year when he came along with a friend who was having their Mini tuned with us. At the time, he didn't even own a Mini and had absolutely no plans to buy one.

Fast forward to a few months ago and while looking to trade in his existing car, he spotted this GP3 on a dealership forecourt. It got him thinking about just how much fun his friend's MINI was, and before long he'd gone from a practical five seater to one of the most exclusive hot hatches with just two seats! Safe to say he fully embraced the Mini life.

Not long after collecting it he got in touch to book in for our Stage 1 custom ECU and gearbox TCU tuning.

With the current heatwave making life difficult on the dyno, we were really impressed with how this GP3 performed. Ambient temperatures were sitting at 34°C, with intake air temperatures climbing to around 50°C, yet it still delivered fantastic results.

🛒 Easy Add-Ons 🛒

We’ve been a little quiet on socials over the last week but the workshop has been flat out. Behind the scenes it’s been non stop and the dyno has barely had a chance to cool down.

This Challenge 210 came in for our Stage 1 tuning. When it arrived Chris was in the middle of a very complex Stage 3 calibration over FaceTime with MAPRO (if you haven’t seen the results yet, it’s well worth checking out on their page).

While we were waiting we got chatting with the owner about future plans for the car. The conversation turned to the MMR intake resonator delete pipe and as luck would have it, we had one sitting on the shelf.

By the time Chris was ready to begin calibrating, the intake upgrade was fitted and ready to go.

It’s one of those simple modifications that makes perfect sense to do while the car is already with us.

💻 Gearbox TCU Tuning 💻

For the last two years we’ve been providing custom TCU (Transmission Control Unit) tuning for customers all over the world, covering the 6-speed and 8-speed Aisin gearboxes, along with the 7-speed DCT.

Behind the scenes this wasn’t something we rushed. Years of research, development and testing went into creating our own calibrations to ensure they deliver the performance, drivability and reliability we expect before ever offering them to customers.

We currently support MINI, BMW and Volvo.

While other TCU tuning options are often limited to only a handful of gearbox variants, we’re able to tune the vast majority of pre locked TCUs across the supported platforms.

🚀 Contrary To Popular Belief 🚀

Over the years we've heard all sorts of comments. Some people seem to think every Mini that comes through our doors leaves with the biggest numbers possible and enough torque to launch itself into orbit.

One of the things we say almost daily in the workshop is:
"It makes what it makes."

That isn't just a saying, it's genuinely how we approach every single car we tune.
We don't force cars to hit a target figure. We don't chase a number just so it looks good on social media. We don't keep adding boost and torque because someone on the internet thinks every Stage 1 should make a certain power figure.

Every car is different. Mileage, condition, fuel quality, maintenance history, hardware and even the weather on the day all play a part. Our job is to find what that individual car is happy making safely and reliably.

This Cooper S is a great example.

Looking at the graph you'll notice no huge torque spike low down in the rev range.
Instead of creating a big headline figure at 2,500-3,000rpm, we've built the torque progressively through the mid range, allowing the car to pull harder for longer and maintain strong power all the way through the rev range. The result is a car that feels fast everywhere rather than delivering one big hit before running out of steam.

The dyno graph shows an increase of over 64HP and nearly 82NM but what it doesn't show is how much nicer the car feels to drive. Smoother power delivery, stronger acceleration through the gears and a much broader usable powerband.
Because at the end of the day, we're not tuning a dyno graph.
We're tuning the car.

And whether it makes 270HP or 320HP, our attitude remains exactly the same..

🖐 Worth the wait 🖐

This 2024 JCW got in touch with us back in January looking to take advantage of our same day ECU unlock. Unfortunately at the time we had to postpone this and took a list of people wanting the service. When the time was right we reached out to get the customer booked in.

We fitted a selection of supporting modifications including a Direnza intercooler, MMR intake resonator delete pipe, ITG panel filter and a fresh set of NGK91469 spark plugs gapped to 0.5mm.

Once everything was fitted we carried out the unlock on the ECU and strapped the car on the dyno.

The ambient temperate in the dyno was sitting around 32 degree, this has a significant impact. A hot day can easily cost 10-20HP compared to a cool day. We've seen cars return on cooler days and gain power without a single change to the calibration simply because the intake temperatures are under control.

The calibration hasn't suddenly become worse because it made less power at 32°C. In many cases, the car is simply working harder to overcome the heat and the ECU is doing its job by protecting the engine.

That's one of the reasons we often encourage customers to look at the entire graph and how the car performs on the road, rather than focusing solely on the peak horsepower figure. A safe repeatable 300HP on a 32°C day is often more impressive than a 310HP dyno figure achieved in perfect winter conditions.

🚀 THE 300HP CLUB 🚀

Some customers arrive as strangers. Others feel like part of the journey long before they ever even use our services. This customer belonged firmly in the second category.

Before we'd even met we already knew the name. A familiar face in the comments, a regular supporter of our posts and someone who has followed what we do for a long time. There's something really special about finally meeting people like that in person. People who genuinely enjoy following the journey, take pride in maintaining their car properly and arrive just as enthusiastic in real life as they are online.

In fact this customer is the reason our 300HP Club stickers now exist. A casual comment in passing was all it took for us to think "That's actually a brilliant idea." A few days later, they became a reality.

The JCW arrived in great shape and already had some carefully chosen modifications fitted:
