HEV, PHEV, BEV or Hydrogen – what’s the difference?
As more drivers switch to alternative fuel vehicles, it’s useful to understand how each system works. Although they all reduce emissions compared to traditional petrol or diesel cars, they achieve it in different ways.
🔵 HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle)
A hybrid combines a petrol engine with an electric motor. The battery charges itself through regenerative braking and the engine, so there’s no need to plug it in. They’re ideal if you want better fuel economy without changing your driving habits.
🟢 PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle)
A plug-in hybrid has a larger battery that can be charged from the mains. Many daily journeys can be completed using electric power alone, while the petrol engine is there for longer trips. Great if you have access to charging but still want the reassurance of a fuel tank.
🟣 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle)
A fully electric vehicle is powered entirely by a high-voltage battery and electric motor. There’s no engine, exhaust or fuel tank, meaning fewer moving parts and lower servicing requirements. They produce zero tailpipe emissions but rely on charging infrastructure.
🔵 FCEV (Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle)
Hydrogen vehicles generate electricity on board by combining hydrogen with oxygen inside a fuel cell. The only emission from the exhaust is water vapour. They can be refuelled in minutes like a conventional car, but hydrogen filling stations are still very limited in the UK.
Each technology has its place. Hybrids are great for improving fuel economy, plug-in hybrids offer the best of both worlds, battery electric vehicles provide zero-emission driving, and hydrogen could play a bigger role as refuelling infrastructure develops.
