Why a Service or Pre-Purchase Inspection Matters When Buying a Trailer

We recently had a trailer brought in for a service after the owner noticed it didn’t feel right while towing.

What we found was shocking, it was completely missing all sets of brake shoes and key braking components.

This isn’t just a minor issue. It’s extremely dangerous and the trailer should not have been towed at all or even sold in that state!

There are strict legal requirements for trailers over 750kg to be fitted with a functioning braking system — and for good reason. Without it, you’re putting yourself and others on the road at serious risk.

A proper inspection before purchase, or even a routine service, can catch issues like this before they become dangerous (or costly).

If you’re buying a trailer, don’t skip the checks.

Owning a trailer comes with a responsibility to keep your horses safe, especially when travelling.

We’re seeing more and more trailers coming in that simply aren’t roadworthy or safe for horses. In many cases, structural issues like soft side panel are easy to spot, but often overlooked.

This video highlights just how much movement there can be in a panel. Now consider the weight of a horse, five or six times heavier, leaning, shifting, or even kicking during transport. That level of force can quickly turn a weak spot into a serious and deadly risk.

We understand that budgets are tight, and trailers can be expensive. But safety should never be compromised. Some trailers currently being sold for around £2,500 may look like a bargain, but could require significant repairs to be truly safe.

Regular servicing and setting aside funds for maintenance can make all the difference, not just for the trailer, but for your horse’s wellbeing.

Trailer servicing isn’t just a quick once-over — it includes a thorough inspection of EVERY panel, the floor, and the roof of your horse trailer.

And honestly… it’s one of the most important parts of keeping your horse safe.

Solid panels aren’t optional when you’re transporting 600–700kg of moving weight. They’re essential.

This trailer was bought and sold as “solid.”
This photo shows the best panel out of all five.

One wrong step from a 700kg horse, and that ramp could have given way — leading to serious, potentially catastrophic injury.

This is exactly why proper servicing and inspections matter. What looks “fine” on the surface isn’t always safe.

Don’t take the risk. Your horse is relying on you.

🚚 Trailer Servicing – Don’t Leave It Too Late!

Regular trailer servicing is essential to keep you safe on the road and protect what you are towing.
We strongly recommend servicing your trailer at least once a year to prevent small issues turning into expensive or dangerous problems. (High milage trailers, like car transporters, are recommended for 3/6 months )

Trailers that are 10–15 years old often start to require panel replacements, and trailers stored on exposed land can suffer from tyre perishing and deterioration much faster than if the trailer is barn stored.

One of the biggest risks we see is brakes not working correctly. When brake cables stick on or shoes delaminate, it can cause wheel bearings to overheat and collapse, which in extreme cases can lead to the wheel coming off completely.
