🔧 Did you know your 1.2 PureTech engine may need its wet belt replacing every 6 years? This engine and timing belt set up is found in many modern Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall models.

Unlike a conventional timing belt, these belts run in engine oil and can deteriorate over time. If left too long, this can lead to oil pressure problems and potentially serious engine damage.

At Calverts Autocentre, we’ve invested in the correct specialist tooling and training to replace wet belts on both the turbo and non-turbo versions of the 1.2 PureTech engine, following manufacturer procedures.

🚗 A VERY LUCKY VISIT TO CALVERTS AUTOCENTRE!

We recently had this Mercedes E220d come into the workshop with a vibration and unusual noise. The customer also wanted us to check whether the car was safe to drive.

It’s a very good job they popped in when they did, because what we found was one of the most dangerous tyre situations we’ve seen in a while. 😳

🔴 Two tyres had exposed cords, with one showing a significant bulge and looking like it could fail at any moment.

🔴 The other two tyres had virtually no tread left on the inner edges, making them unsafe and well overdue for replacement.

It’s a great reminder that tyre wear isn’t always obvious from looking at the outside of the tyre. Inner-edge wear can go unnoticed, particularly if you’re not regularly checking your tyres.

September and October are always some of our busiest months for MOTs, thanks to the number of new car registrations and the knock-on effect of the 6-month COVID MOT extension, which means many motorists are now due their MOT around this time of year.

And if September was anything to go by, we’re expecting October to be very busy! 📅

👀 Something’s happening behind the scenes…

If you’ve been following us for a while, you might remember me teasing a few changes coming to the garage when I shared a photo of our old office being moved outside.

Well… things have been pretty busy behind the scenes since then! 👀

You may have noticed this van out and about… but we’re not giving too much away just yet. 🤫

There’s a lot more to come that we’ll be revealing over the coming weeks.

We’ve been working hard to make some big improvements, and we can’t wait to show you the finished results.

🚗 Diagnostic Success at Bakers MOT – Another Happy Customer! 🔧

We recently had a 2014 Volkswagen Golf in our workshop with two common but frustrating symptoms:
💧 Losing coolant
🌡️ No warm air from the cabin heaters

Our investigation started with a full visual inspection and a cooling system pressure test, but no external leaks could be found.

Looking closer, we noticed the coolant in the expansion (header) tank contained a fine sand-like residue. This is a well-known issue affecting a number of Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG) vehicles from this era. In many cases, the silica material from the coolant expansion tank, or fine casting residue left in the cooling system, can contaminate the coolant and gradually block the narrow passages inside the heater matrix. The restricted coolant flow reduces cabin heating and can cause the cooling system to overheat, forcing coolant out of the expansion tank.

Following the manufacturer’s recommended repair procedure, we:
✅ Treated the cooling system with the genuine VAG neutraliser and cooling system cleaner.
✅ Thoroughly cleaned and flushed the entire cooling system.
✅ Replaced the heater matrix in line with manufacturer guidance.
✅ Refilled and carefully bled the cooling system.
✅ Carried out extensive road testing to confirm the fault had been resolved.

The result? ✔️ Full cabin heating restored, cooling system operating correctly, and another satisfied customer back on the road.

If your Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT or Škoda is suffering from:
🔹 No cabin heat
🔹 Unexplained coolant loss
🔹 Coolant being pushed out of the expansion tank
🔹 Brown or gritty-looking coolant

Don’t ignore the symptoms. Early diagnosis can help prevent further damage and more expensive repairs.
