StarterMotor

StarterMotor Fueling young careers in the world of historic and classic cars with hands-on access to vehicles, events, and educational opportunities.

The collective historic vehicle sector has experienced rapid growth in recent years: it is now thought to be worth over £5bn annually to the UK’s economy, and it employs some 34,900 people. However, whilst expanding, it is also ageing, resulting in a younger generation missing out on both the valuable skills required and also historic vehicle ownership, particularly as costs of ownership can be ou

tside the reach of many young enthusiasts. 1,000 new engineers are estimated to be required over the next 5 years just to stem this erosion. The net result is a real possibility of valuable skills being lost, to the detriment of the industry, economy, employment and historic car enthusiasts. There is a clear need to engage a younger generation, with the aim of encouraging them to take up careers in the historic vehicle industry and to enjoy historic vehicles.

Volunteering, for a lot of young people, is the first real step into an industry.

It’s how you build experience, meet people, and figure out what you actually enjoy doing.

From our StarterMotor Ambassadors who generously give their time to support events and act as voices from the next generation within the classic and historic motor industry, to volunteers behind every heritage motorsport event, this industry relies on passionate people giving their time up for a world they love.

This Volunteering Week, we want to recognise and thank everyone who contributes their time and energy into such a rewarding activity.

Here are a few organisations that offer volunteering opportunities 'of all shapes and sizes':

From screen to reality - the new Forza Horizon exhibition at the truly demonstrates how digital car culture inspires real-world passion.

For many young car enthusiasts, the journey starts with a controller in hand. Video games give them that first taste of being behind the wheel, in cars worthy enough for a space on the bedroom wall.

The exhibition brings this to life in a powerful way: play the 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B STI in-game, then step away from the screen and see the real car up close. A true bridge between virtual and reality.

We’re proud to be working alongside the British Motor Museum and can’t wait to be back for their STEM Days later this month, connecting with future talent and showing just how many exciting career paths exist in the world of classic automotive.

Educators, there's only a few spaces remaining - head to the website to secure your place.

Somehow, we’re already almost halfway through 2026 ⚡Perhaps time to reflect on a few highlights from the year so far...

🎫 We’ve attended 19 events, half of which were careers education focused, with at least 20 planned for the remainder of the year.

🛠️ We’ve seen over 4,600 young people across these different career events, either attending as a presenter or organising and hosting the event.

🌟 We’ve provided 32 young people with an interest in the sector, tailored support - from one-to-one mentoring to access to events and work experience opportunities.

The first half of the year has been nothing short of incredible, helping the next generation discover meaningful futures and careers in our industry.

Let's see what the remainder of the year has in store for us...

The Hagerty Hill Climb - always a highlight on our calendar. 🏁

On Saturday, we joined the Hagerty team at the iconic to soak up the atmosphere at their annual Hill Climb and it certainly did not disappoint.

From the unmistakable sounds (yes, some beautifully loud engines), to the smells and stunning surroundings, it all came together for a pretty perfect day.

It was an especially special day for our Ambassadors... with Andrew taking his Elise up the Hill and Adele at providing toe-gripping passenger rides along the way too. All in all it was a very good day indeed.

Thanks Hagerty, and congratulations on a successful event!
