Porsche has never treated its history as something to preserve behind glass.

It’s always been something to build from.

The Mission S clearly looks back; the 550, 917, 959 and GT1 are all in there somewhere, but it doesn’t feel like a greatest-hits exercise. It feels more like Porsche revisiting the ideas that made those cars important in the first place.

Lightness, simplicity, purpose, and the belief that motorsport should influence the road cars.

That’s probably the most interesting thing about Mission S. The references are familiar, but the intention feels very Porsche: take what worked, move it on, and don’t overcomplicate it.

Porsche 917/10 chassis 001, the original prototype built in 1970 and one of the most important development cars in Porsche’s motorsport history.

This car played a major role in the evolution of the 917 programme, being used extensively by Porsche for testing and development as the company pushed the limits of performance. It was also involved in early turbocharged development work, helping lay the foundations for the brutally fast 917/10 and 917/30 Can-Am cars that would follow.

After its factory development career, chassis 001 went on to compete in period before eventually spending many years in storage and later being restored. Its history makes it far more than just a striking race car. It is a genuine piece of Porsche engineering history from one of the most ambitious eras in endurance and sports car racing.

Seeing a car with this level of provenance and significance on display at Megaphonics was something special. The 917 remains one of Porsche’s most iconic racing machines, and chassis 001 is right at the heart of that story.

In 1998, French Porsche distributor Sonauto Levallois entered a brand-new 911 GT2 in the FFSA GT Championship for gentleman racer François Lafon and former Grand Prix driver Jean-Pierre Jarier.

But this was no ordinary GT2.

The car wore a spectacular pop-art livery created by German artist Peter Klasen, instantly making it one of the most distinctive Porsche race cars of the era.

Lafon and Jarier enjoyed a hugely successful season until the car was crashed at the Le Mans Bugatti circuit in September 1998. With the championship still on the line, Lafon immediately ordered a replacement car and convinced Klasen to recreate the artwork.

Klasen himself called the new car “Klasen 2.”

It debuted at the 1998 FFSA GT finale at Magny-Cours, finishing 2nd in race one before winning race two.

The car continued racing throughout 1999 with defending champions Lafon and Jarier, taking victories at Lédenon, Nogaro and Valencia.

The original Klasen GT2 was later restored, but never returned to its famous colours.

Two cars. One unforgettable livery.
