THE WHAT AND WHY #1: Diff Drop Kits 🔧
Lifted your IFS truck? This is the part most people skip, and the one your CV axles will thank you for.
WHAT IT IS
A vehicle-specific kit of heavy-duty brackets, spacers and hardware that lowers your front differential back toward its factory position.
ITS PURPOSE
On an independent front suspension (IFS) truck, the front diff is bolted to the frame. When you lift the truck, the frame goes up but the wheels stay on the ground, so the CV axles that connect them are forced into a steep downward angle. A diff drop brings the diff back down with the lift and flattens those angles back toward factory.
WHY IT MATTERS
CV joints are built to work within a set angle. Push them past it and you get:
❌ Torn CV boots, then dirt and water in the joint
❌ Premature joint and wheel bearing wear
❌ Clicking and binding at full lock under power
❌ A snapped axle on the trail, usually far from help
A diff drop costs a fraction of one CV axle and a tow.
WHEN YOU NEED ONE
✅ Lifting a Toyota IFS truck (Tacoma, 4Runner, FJ, GX, Prado, Land Cruiser, Tundra, Sequoia, Hilux) over 2.5"
✅ Running long-travel struts that let the wheels droop further
✅ Isuzu D-Max / MU-X and Ford Bronco builds at the top of their lift range
✅ Trucks that see 4WD under load: trails, sand, snow, towing
WHEN YOU DON'T
Under 2" of lift, or on platforms whose front geometry already handles the lift (a Ford Ranger, for example). Fitting parts a truck doesn't need isn't a better build, just a more expensive one.
THE TRADE-OFF
• The diff sits slightly lower, so it's a little more exposed to rocks
• Skid plates may need spacing down (most kits include the hardware)
THE ORS STANDARD
If the platform needs it, over 2.5" = diff drop. Every time. Dobinsons makes a kit for each platform, and Build Biology adds the right one to your build automatically.
