Can you get a ticket for driving with a cracked windshield in Ontario? 🚔 The short answer is yes.
Section 74(1) of Ontario's Highway Traffic Act requires your windshield and front side windows to give the driver a clear view to the front and to the sides. If a crack, a star break or other damage blocks that view, police can ticket the driver. Officers use their discretion, but damage right in front of the driver is the kind that gets noticed.
A ticket is only part of the story. A cracked windshield also:
• Creates glare from the sun and oncoming headlights
• Distorts what you see, especially at night or in rain
• Tends to spread with potholes, gravel and Ontario's temperature swings
• Can get your G2 or G road test cancelled, since DriveTest checks your vehicle first and lists a damaged windshield as a reason to cancel
And remember, your windshield is a safety device. It helps support the roof and helps the passenger airbag deploy correctly, so a proper repair or replacement matters.
Not sure if you need a repair or a replacement? Small rock chips can often be repaired. Long cracks, cracks that reach the edge of the glass and damage in the driver's line of sight usually mean windshield replacement.
