Here’s a condensed look at the 1.8L twin overhead cam engine tear down for our 1975 Fiat Spider project.

What started as a routine inspection quickly revealed bigger issues. Jordan found 80% leakage across all four cylinders, along with significant rust buildup on the valve seats and cylinder walls - clear signs that this engine’s problems ran deeper than expected. With findings like that, further teardown is the only option. The engine is now coming apart piece by piece to uncover the extent of the damage and determine what can be saved, repaired, or replaced. We also found a leaking shifter shaft which means we’ll be disassembling the transmission as well to see if the previous rebuild was done correctly.

Follow along to see what we uncover next during the initial stages of this full restoration and what it’ll take for our team to bring it back to life.

Today Jordan is removing the 1.8 litre twin overhead cam Fiat engine from our 1975 Fiat Spider project. In for a full restoration, the ‘75 Fiat Spyder is often referred to as the Miata of its time. An affordable sports car that is most admired for its Pininfarina styling, its high-revving Aurelio Lampredi-designed twin-cam engine, and its slick-shifting 5-speed manual transmission.

Rare parts can get expensive quick, and are hard to find in mint condition — that’s where creativity comes in handy.

In today’s update, Alex shows us how we tackle the challenges of obsolete parts and what we can do to rebuild original parts from scratch

Before this Alfa can see the dip tank, it first had to undergo thermal stripping. This process burns away paint, underseal, fillers, seam sealer, rubber, and other organic materials, leaving nothing but bare metal.

Sounds clean... but rust still remains. Thermal stripping only removes the coatings, not the oxidation. That’s why the shell still needs to go through a chemical de-rusting process (the acid dip), followed by neutralization and a thorough rinse.”

➡️ Up Next: The alfa will need a huge amount of metal repair. Then, it will go for the acid dip to remove rust from the fabrication process.

⚒️ After that, we will epoxy prime the car inside and out and start the bodywork.
