What is the future of electric vehicles?

The future of electric vehicles is promising, as governments around the world continue to promote their adoption as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.

Many car manufacturers are investing heavily in electric vehicle technology, and new models with longer driving ranges and faster charging times are being introduced every year. I know, I know. One of the common gripes about electric cars is the time it takes to charge them up.

Thankfully, there are some very smart people in charge of charging.

Behind the scenes, scientists are doing amazing things with electrochemistry.

Their aim is to ensure pitstops that take no longer than a traditional stop at the petrol station are part of our not-to-distant future.

Oh! The possibilities for the future are endless!

As a car designer, imagine what you can do when you can strip away all those parts that are no longer needed. That dated engine, the fuel-guzzling tank, the radiator, the transmission and that exhaust pipe constantly belching carbon emissions.

As the world of the EV continues to grow and evolve and drivers become ever more comfortable with choosing a “plug-in car”, we’re going to see some seriously experimental designs on the car equivalent of the catwalk.

What has been fondly dubbed the ‘skateboard platform’ is already something of a blank canvas, ready for the sleek, the funky, the micro and the space-age – and everything in between.

As we increasingly ditch the idea of what a car should look like, there’s even talk of driverless cars as moving entertainment spaces.

It’s all part of the rapidly changing face of modern motoring and I love it!

The agricultural industry is looking towards an electric future too.

Fossil fuels used in farming have a major impact on climate change which is why there's recent discussions around switching the industry's fuel-powered machinery to electric alternatives.

Electric Farm Vehicles (EVFs) are three times more efficient than hydrogen fuel cells and offer the benefits of reduced safety risks, carbon emissions, cost and noise concerns while improving efficiency of work.

There are already some Australian companies providing EVFs such as Fendt’s e100 Vario and Case IH’s Magnum Rowtrac.

I’m not one to toot my own horn (well, maybe a little) but did you know that I’m now the best-selling car in the world? (Sorry, not sorry, Toyota Corolla.)

The number-crunchers at JATO Dynamics have revealed that in the first three months of this year, 267,200 nifty Tesla Model Y electric crossovers just like me were sold across the globe.

I’ve been quite the hit here in Australia since I was launched in June last year and am already the second bestselling SUV of any type Down Under. (I see you, Toyota RAV4.)

While all the attention is enough to make a girl blush, let’s not forget there’s a bigger win to celebrate.

With an EV now proudly topping the charts, it’s safe to say we’ve reached an important milestone in the EV transition.

There are currently tax incentives and rebates available in Australia for purchasing an electric vehicle. The Australian Federal Government offers a tax break on electric vehicles, and some state and territory governments offer additional incentives such as stamp duty exemptions, registration discounts, and charging infrastructure grants. Additionally, some car manufacturers offer incentives for purchasing electric vehicles, such as free charging or extended warranties!
