A German Tesla owner has repurposed a used Model 3 battery pack into a 79 kWh home energy storage system charged by 11 kW of rooftop solar panels, giving the battery a productive second life long after it left the car. The setup works exactly as you'd expect - solar charges the battery during the day, the battery powers the home at night, and the electricity bill essentially vanishes. For context, Tesla's Powerwall 3 offers 13.5 kWh of storage per unit, so this single retired Model 3 pack delivers nearly 6x that capacity from a battery that most people would assume is done. This is the part of the EV story that critics consistently ignore - when a combustion engine reaches end of life it becomes worthless scrap, but an EV battery that has degraded past its useful driving range still has more than enough capacity to run a home for potentially another decade.
