The Volkswagen rolled on today with another spectacular route, this time from Sani Pass Resort in KwaZulu-Natal to Barkly East via Matatiele and Rhodes in the Eastern Cape.
After yesterday’s stint behind the wheel of the V6, it was time to sample the new 125 kW 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel Amarok Life 4Motion. While it may not have the outright muscle of its bigger sibling, it proved itself remarkably capable across a demanding route, while rewarding with noticeably lower fuel consumption.
The seemingly endless gravel roads also provided the perfect opportunity to experience the Amarok’s excellent Goodyear all-terrain tyres. Highlights included tackling Naudé’s Nek, South Africa’s highest gravel pass and a road steeped in local motorsport history as a former stage of the South African National Rally Championship.
Tomorrow, the convoy heads to Graaff-Reinet as this memorable adventure draws to a close.
