Earlier this year, The Archive was visited by something that makes even serious machinery look slightly underdressed.

This is the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport “Le Diamant Blanc” or the White Diamond. A long-tail, 440 km/h expression of what happens when physics, money and absolute stubbornness are all asked to sit in the same room and behave.

On paper, it is predictably absurd. An 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16. 1,600 PS. 1,600 Nm. A shape stretched and honed for speed figures that belong more to aviation than motoring. Finished in Glacier and Nocturne, it arrives with an elegance that feels almost contradictory. It is not loud in the obvious way. It does not need to be. The proportions do the talking, the details hold your attention and the longer you look, the more you realise this is less hypercar and more mechanical jewellery.

And then there is the drink-holder.

Yes, in a car capable of 440 km/h, one of the best stories is about somewhere to put a drink. After a spill in the door pocket, Bugatti did what Bugatti does and engineered a solution. A bespoke, tool-less, clip-in dual drink-holder, designed specifically for the car and owner.

Because apparently, when you build one of the most complex road cars ever made, even the drink-holder deserves a development story.

That is what makes “Le Diamant Blanc” so fascinating. It is the wonderful madness of a machine where every detail, from the W16 to the place you put your Red Bulls , is treated like it matters.
