The AIMS South Africa Master’s in Mathematical Sciences is designed as an intensive learning experience, but students do not do it alone.

Students learn through lectures, tutorials, group work and close academic support from resident tutors, visiting lecturers and researchers.

AIMS South Africa’s impact does not end at graduation.

For more than 20 years, AIMS South Africa has trained students who go on to contribute across universities, research institutions, government, industry and public service.

As described in the award video, students come to AIMS, receive advanced training and exposure to new possibilities, and then become “the ripple in their own ocean” wherever they go next.

The AIMS journey continues.

At the AIMS Alumni in South Africa Reunion, held on 20 June 2026, alumni reflected on what this community has meant in their lives: opportunity, independence, problem-solving, friendship, family, and a network that continues to open doors.

Across countries, disciplines and careers, AIMS alumni continue to carry their mathematical sciences training into spaces of research, education, technology, innovation and impact.

AIMS South Africa’s home in Muizenberg carries a rich history.

Housed in a former hotel, the AIMS campus has been transformed into a vibrant residential academic space where students, lecturers, tutors, researchers and visitors come together.

The building’s heritage is part of the atmosphere: a place that once welcomed travellers now welcomes talented students from across Africa as they prepare for new journeys in science, research, education and innovation.

Here's what participants had to say about the AIMS AI Research Foundations Pilot Workshop.

These reflections capture the impact of the workshop, where participants progressed from learning modern AI concepts including tokenization, neural networks, transformers, attention mechanisms, large language models, GPUs, and responsible innovation practices, to adapting the learning materials and confidently teaching these concepts.

Join us for the Women in Sage Workshop at AIMS South Africa from 05–09 October 2026.

This one-week workshop will bring together women in mathematics for collaborative research, new project development, networking, and shared learning around SageMath.

Participants will work with group leaders across a range of mathematical areas, including financial mathematics, cryptography, statistics, combinatorics, algebra, operations research and number theory.
