Nobody tests the heater in September, which is exactly why the first cold morning catches so many people out. Weak heat, a defroster that takes forever to clear the glass, or a blower that only works on its highest setting are all small problems right now and all miserable problems in December. A tune up used to mean points, plugs and a carburetor adjustment. On a modern car it means something else entirely. Spark plugs on the manufacturer's schedule, filters, a look at the ignition coils, fuel system and engine sensors, and a scan to see what the computer has been logging even when no warning light is showing. A trouble code names a circuit, not a broken part. A code that points at an oxygen sensor can be a failed sensor, or it can be a vacuum leak, a wiring fault, or an exhaust leak upstream making a perfectly good sensor report bad numbers. Replacing the part the code names is how people end up paying for the same repair twice. We read the code, then test the system it points at, so what gets replaced is what actually failed. Here is what actually happens when we quote brakes, because the phrase "brake job" hides a lot. We measure pad thickness and rotor thickness against the manufacturer's minimum, check the rotors for runout and heat damage, and look at the hardware, hoses and fluid at the same time. Sometimes that means pads only. Sometimes the rotors have to come with them, because they are already under spec and will not clean up. You get told which it is, and why, before anything is done. A check engine light is not one message, it is two. A steady light means the car has stored a fault and wants attention soon, and you can usually finish your drive and book a visit. A flashing light is a different situation. It usually means a misfire is sending unburned fuel into the exhaust, and that can damage the catalytic converter in a surprisingly short drive. The first cool mornings of the season are when a lot of brake problems finally announce themselves. Cold metal, damp air and a thin film of surface rust on the rotors can turn a small issue into a squeal, a grind, or a pedal that just feels different on the way to work.
