Getting in depends on your odometer at your first BG service. Not today's odometer. The first one.

Under 50,000 miles gets you full coverage. Between 50,001 and 75,000 gets you half coverage, and on a gas engine that second door stays open to 125,000. Your vehicle also has to be under 20 years old at that first service.

Staying in is simpler than people expect. Come back for the service inside its mileage interval. That is the whole requirement, and there is a 500 mile grace period built in.

You do not have to track any of it. We do. That is our job, not yours.

Coolant is not just antifreeze. It also stops the inside of your cooling system from rusting.

There are additives in there doing that job, and they get used up over time.

When they are gone, the coolant is still green or orange and still full. It just quit protecting. Rust starts building in the radiator and the heater core.

Then one cold morning your heater blows cool air, and that is the first you hear about it.

We are about six weeks from the first cold snap. Good time to have it checked.

If you have to make constant small corrections to keep the car in its lane, that is not the road and it is not your imagination.

Somewhere in the steering there is slop. Usually a tie rod end, sometimes a ball joint, sometimes the rack itself.

Every one of those parts wears slowly, which is why you get used to it instead of noticing it.

Here is the honest reason to deal with it. These are the parts that connect your steering wheel to your wheels. They are not a place to find out how much wear is too much.

Nobody wants to spend money on air conditioning in October. We understand.

But think about how it goes the other way. You ignore it all winter, then the first 95 degree day in May you call every shop in town, and so does everybody else.

Right now there is no wait. In May there is.

A shake in the steering wheel when you brake is worth getting looked at.

It is usually the rotors, and more than one thing can cause it. We would rather take the wheel off and see than guess at it from the driveway.

If the rotors are the problem, you get new ones. We do not resurface and we do not reuse, so whatever caused the shake is not still on the car when you drive off.

There is a whole side of your car you have never seen.

With it up on the lift we can put a hand on a tie rod and feel play that does not show up in the steering wheel yet. We can see a boot that has split and started throwing grease. We can spot a leak by where it is wet, not by where it dripped.

None of that is visible in a parking lot.

That is why an inspection is worth doing even when nothing feels wrong. Most of what we catch, we catch early.

If you take one thing from this month, take this one.

A transmission is full of clutches and valves and narrow passages. The fluid in there is not just lubricant. It is the hydraulic fluid that actually makes the shifts happen.

When it breaks down, shifts get lazy, then harsh, then they stop.

By the time you feel it, the damage is usually already done.

This is the service where doing it early is worth the most, and the one people put off the longest.

A humming or growling that changes when you change lanes.

That is the tell. Swerve gently left and it gets louder or quieter, swerve right and it does the opposite. You are loading and unloading the bad bearing.

People live with this for months because it sounds like tire noise.

The difference matters. A worn bearing gets worse, gets hot, and in a bad case lets the wheel move in ways a wheel should not move.

If your car hums and the pitch changes with steering, get it looked at.

Ask ten drivers when they last changed their brake fluid. Nine will not know they were supposed to.

Brake fluid absorbs water out of the air. A little every year, and there is no way to stop it.

Water boils at a far lower temperature than brake fluid does. On a long downhill, or a panic stop, or a hot day pulling a trailer, that water can flash to steam.

Steam compresses. Fluid does not. That is a soft pedal at the exact moment you need a hard one.

It is a quick service and it is one of the few that is genuinely about safety.
