It's that time of year again. This is probably the earliest winterization I've done. The weather doesn't seem like fall is around the corner. But when your kids ride the machines the most and they have left for college I guess getting started early is better than 140 machines showing up at the last minute.

Again I can't stress enough to watch the water you Jet Ski in. Customer had a power loss after getting machine back and putting two Hrs on it. He looked under the machine and didn't see weeds hanging down so figured it was something else. Just looking under the machine or feeling around by the intake grate isn't enough. You're not always gonna see weeds hanging out of the bottom of the ski. You need to tip the machine up on its correct side which means exhaust side down as to not dump the water in the exhaust back into the cylinders and then look up inside the intake grate where you can see the impeller. This one had a huge ball wrapped around the driveshaft in front of the impeller With some of it stuck coming through the impeller and plugging up the water passages that deliver water to cool the engine. If you notice the machine struggling to go or the temperature light coming on stop the machine and look for weeds. The weeds will interrupt the water flow coming in and will create air bubbles or cavitation which intern stops a solid flow of water to the cooling jacket and the machine will struggle to pump water to the engine .

Tip of the day:

One of the most common calls I get during the summer is, "My machine all of a sudden lost power, Just won't go!" I tell them, "look up inside the jet drive intake grate and check for weeds or debris". Every time they say, "There's nothing in it"

Then it gets here and there's debris.

When checking for weeds under your machine they're not always gonna be hanging out of the bottom of the intake grate for you to see, Debris will wrap around the driveshaft like these machines and interrupt the water coming in creating air pockets which caused cavitation and this is where you lose your power. You have to get up underneath the machine and look up into that intake grate. You may have to run it back to the launch and get it out with your trailer to crawl underneath it otherwise if you have the machine up near the beach and have a couple people you can tip it up on its side toward the exhaust side of the machine. Most of them will have a decal on the back telling you which way to roll it on its side but rolling it the wrong way while the engine is off can take water from the exhaust system and put it into the cylinders so it's critical that you tip to the side of the exhaust where it comes off the engine. Typically it is on the left side of the engine this would mean you want to tip it clockwise from the back.
These are two examples of machines that showed nothing hanging out the bottom and the customers missed the real problem farther up inside .

It seems endless with dealerships and repair shops half assing repairs instead of doing them correctly. On todays episode we have a poor lady that has counted on a local dealership to take care of her machine and paid good money so it's ready to enjoy for the summer. Instead she got her machine with the seal between body halves not in its proper Channel. Instead it was pushed out to the edge where the two machine halves bolt together and what does the dealership do when they put the haves together and the seal is out across the mounting hole? They punch a hole through the seal and bolted together anyway so she has water leaking in the side of her hull on her spark. If that wasn't enough they had dropped tools down inside the JetSki and instead of fishing them out they just left them in there to bounce around. Then broke a bunch of the plastic washers to the mounting bolt because they were all over torque. And when her son took it out to ride it it was taking water and when he rolled it over on its side out in the water the battery came out of the tray because it had no strap and shorted out electrical parts.

The other machine that came in recently had the impeller replaced And they just didn't put in the rubber boot on the front of the impeller where it goes on the driveshaft which serves two purposes. The first one is to hold the grease for the spines on the shaft sealed to keep excessive wear off of the driveshaft. The second is that rubber boot is tapered so that the water coming into the impeller is a solid flow so the machine gets maximum drive from solid water. Without it the water coming in catches the lip on the front of the impeller without the boot and creates an air pocket which then intern disturbs the water flow and creates cavitation. And then after neglecting to put a boot in or any grease, somehow must've lost some stainless bolts for the jet pump and just put regular ones in which turn to rust and made it difficult to get them out while trying not to snap them off.
Why cut corners? it just creates more problems and makes the repair worse than what you started with.

I have said before that you need to look over your bikes, ATV's, and SXS's after they have sat all winter for signs of mice on/around your machine and in air box before running. Well they will live in your watercraft as well. This machine had a huge nest built around the jet pump and his dining area was next to the impeller filling it with acorn pieces. Always do a thorough check over every square of your machine if it sat somewhere where it was undisturbed all winter. These vermouth don't care how new or what kind of machine you have. To them everything is fair game. Customer started this machine and said it sounded like rocks in his jet pump. After pulling all the nest out and one dead varmint it took a lot of degreaser and pressure washing to get all of the f***s that had turned into liquid tar and the smell off the machine. If you're going to store your machine whether summer or winter toy they do make alternatives to those awful mothballs to place around your machines rodents on Amazon. It's worth a few dollars to save from the labor of cleaning it up or them causing any damage.

I don't do the rescuing, I leave that up to the professionals. But we do make sure the equipment is always ready and reliable if there is an emergency. We appreciate all the local fire departments for entrusting us to handle all thier watercraft rescue equipment!

Well we know why it runs rough. If you have a machine and it is been setting don't assume that mice can't find their way into it. Before you even start it, look around the machine and in the airbox and make sure there's no nest before you start it up. Because if they chew through the air filter all that goes into your motor.

The seasons are changing around the shop. The summer machines are starting to roll in along with sleds getting serviced and summerized. Phones been ringing non stop and the schedule is doing anything but letting up. Putting in those productive late nights to get this weeks batch wrapped up so we can move on to the trailers packed with machines in the lot for next week. 3 calls for watercraft's already. 2nd week of April before we're ready for those! Always love those calls when people say "when you slow down I've got a project for you". Haha slow down? What's that?
