Power Steering Repair — Stop Topping Off That Fluid. Seriously.
This one's for the Vancouver, WA drivers who've been buying power steering fluid from the auto parts store every few months to keep the wheel feeling normal. We see you. We're not judging. But we need to talk.
Topping off the fluid isn't maintenance. It's a band-aid over a bleed.
If your fluid level keeps dropping, it's leaving the system somewhere. Could be:
- A cracked or swelling pressure hose (extremely common on older vehicles)
- A worn pump shaft seal
- A weeping rack-and-pinion seal
- A loose or damaged hose clamp
Here's the problem: every time the level drops, your pump pulls in air to compensate. That process — cavitation — creates microscopic bubbles that hammer the inside of the pump. The damage is real, cumulative, and completely invisible until the pump fails.
Hazel Dell, Felida, and Brush Prairie drivers — if you've been topping off fluid for more than a couple months, bring it in. We'll find the leak, pressure-test the system, and give you an honest estimate on the actual fix.
The difference between catching a leaking hose clamp early versus waiting until the pump cavitates and fails? About $1,100, on average.
At Springs Brake and Suspension, we'd rather you spend the smaller number.
