Big milestone this weekend… another first driving lesson in the books!

We started with a vehicle walk-around, lights, blinkers, mirrors, seat belt and controls, and even discovered a brake light was out before we ever moved. Then it was off to an empty parking lot for the basics: acceleration, deceleration, braking, turning and, most importantly, CONTROL.

A Tucson Police officer who regularly parks there under the solar panels was heading out and stopped alongside us.

He asked, “New driver or learning stick?”

“It’s my first day, sir.”

The officer smiled and said, “It’s harder than it looks, isn’t it?” He thanked us for starting in an empty parking lot, gave him a few words of encouragement and reminded him to follow the rules of the road and be safe.

Then he looked over at me… “Dad, how are YOU doing?”

“It’s my third child.” 😂

Every new driver learns differently, and after teaching three kids PLUS 17 guests how to drive stick over the years, I’m starting to think Your Tucson Car Guy may need to open a driving school. 😂

For now, short lessons, lots of repetition and one skill at a time.
